dytkos 17,841
I was a big (armchair and Joe Corals lol) supporter of The Dark Destroyer at the time and tbh every fight was a war, thats why we loved him Cheers, D.
Lenmcharristar 9,923
Nigel fell out with that prick warren. Warren and king sent over mcllelan to beat up/kill nigel. but it back fired on them big time. One day that cnunt Warren will get it. Frank Warren was Benns promoter not his manager his manager was Peter Defreitas who wasnt really a boxing man and wasnt really a businessman he was just a local face of the day and Frank Warren knew he could eat him for breakfast in business......if my memory serves me right Nigel was supposed to fight Michael Nunn but Warren/King thought he would make easy work of him and so tried to knock 100k off Nigels purse......when Peter said no they said if you dont accept it we,re going to put Nigel in with Mclellend who was the killer of the division.......Peter and Nigel knew they was being threatened and called their bluff saying f**k it then we,ll fight Mclellend instead.........and the rest is history.what a fight, Nigel done gb proud, he showed what he was made off. Gnash er do you think mcclellend underestimated Nigel?

I dont think so mate he had seen Benns achievements i think he was just so used to having his own way in fights that come the mid rounds it genuinely shocked him that Benn was still walking forward.........i guess its the old " can you take what you dish out " scenario......Benn proved he had the resilience to do just that and Mcllellend came up a little bit short. Think that's a tad harsh tbh, Gerald had a chin made of granite. He walked through the bombs of probably the hardest P4P puncher of all time in Julian Jackson and withstood punches off Benn. Another thing that people don't know is that Gerald blinked hard and heavy in bouts prior to facing Benn, very sad state he is in now poor bloke.
AKA-BRINDLE 879
if McClellens hands had of been wrapped properly...do you think Benn would of got back through the ropes?...and lasted the first round?
DogFox123 1,379
if McClellens hands had of been wrapped properly...do you think Benn would of got back through the ropes?...and lasted the first round? There's talk that he was already damaged goods and had a brain injury or condition before the fight, maybe that's just gossip that always follows after a fight. I have no doubt who would have been the winner if he was in a fit condition and I'm the biggest Nigel Benn fan out there, the fight as an eerie feeling to it for me. I wonder if Gerald knew something wasn't right, rumours are that he knew something was wrong and wanted to quit.
AKA-BRINDLE 879
Yeah there was also rumours that he tried to quit in his corner but Johnson wouldnt let him...got Mitchell's war baby on the shelf somewhere...not to take anything away from Benn...he took some massive shots in the first round...from a man who'd wrapped his own hands!...i think that made a differance Blinking can be a sign of brain injury...you saying he already had a problem prior to the Benn match? Yeah I've read that he was complaining of crippling headaches after the Jackson fight, one of his sparring partners said that he caught Gerald with a jab in between the eyes and he started blinking rapidly and called sparring off complaining of being thumbed, apparently later on he told his sparring partner that the punch sent him funny. YOKEL 2,297
jim watts commentary was a peach..."there's nothing wrong with him, he's swallowed it, lack of heart"...etc.. even when he was collapsed in the corner he said " i recon he's dehydrated"!!!! just as well he wasn't a paramedic... Its not harsh he did come up short.....physically his body let him down having probably not taken as much punishment as Benn took its not a criticism its just what happened. Yokel He was simply repeating what he had heard Dennie Mancini saying in Benns corner......ive noticed over the years he does it a lot listens to what the corner says then repeats it in his commentary.......probably wishes he hadnt done so that night !

There's a member on here that is a friend of nigels, im sure he will pull me up if im wrong.
