Blackbriar 8,569
BH is right, of course. We can't realistically talk of sinking ships, but the scale of the problem can't be over-estimated. On the island of Lesbos..... (did I hear someone giggle ? Settle down !)..... On the island of Lesbos, they used to have a handful a week coming across from Turkey. Last month, they received an average of 200 a day ! Onto one tiny island, where the infrastructure is buckling under the strain...... There have been several incidents of illegals trying to simply storm their way into the Channel Tunnel. They are a serious threat to us, simply by their sheer weight of numbers ! There have been political threats from Italy, Greece and the Med' islands that if they don't receive help, they will issue the illegals with temporary forward travel documents, which would allow them to travel freely across Europe. And guess where they'll head to ! These people bring no papers or other ID with them (makes it almost impossible to 'send them back', if you don't know where they came from in the first place). Add to this the fact that IS are said to be taking over some of the trafficking from Libya, and the security risk is obvious. Not only are we facing a huge and sustained wave of illegal immigrants, but the Royal Navy could actually be picking up our enemies and delivering them right to our doorstep ! Call me paranoid, if you like, but......... Edited July 8, 2015 by Blackbriar
Born Hunter 17,780
There's currently only one RN ship operating for this crisis and that's on humanitarian grounds, not border protection. http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/news-and-latest-activity/news/2015/may/08/150508-bulwark-rescue What's really needed is a large dedicated multinational task force with frigates and patrol vessels for interception and patrol aircraft for detection. A network of patrol ships, their helicopters and patrol aircraft would actively search for likely vessels and act effectively as an extensive Mediterranean border force. Any vessels that aren't ship shape and legit would be ordered to turn around, refusal and they would be forcibly boarded by marines, returned to Libya and the ship scuttled at sea. The foreign aid budget could then be used to grease any political wheels and provide simple and cheap medical aid packages to the immigrants. This of course doesn't solve the problem of WHY they are crossing the med in the first place. Edited July 8, 2015 by Born Hunter
Blackbriar 8,569
I like the idea of off-loading them back in Libya, then scuttling the ships !! They set sail, then immediately call for assistance (which is always given under maritime law). Once the 'passengers' have been taken off the vessel, my understanding is that the captain is then free to go on his way (?) - presumably to go back for the next lot ! Lose the ships and the problem will diminsh, or at least they'll have to start looking for plan B !
