Good for them, those seeking asylum are supposed to seek it in the 1st safe country they enter after leaving their homeland

I agree, the only problem is that most of the burden would then fall on Italy and Greece. Surely it would be better if they were all stopped before landing on any European soil? Most of them aren't genuine asylum seekers anyway, they are economic migrants.Hungary is doing the sensible thing for its own people and country because the EU won't take a harder stance, no worse than the French trying to shovel them over the channel to us. I've just had a thought, why don't we crate up all our illegals and send them to Ireland?

If they wanted to be here they'd be here what's to stop them any fool with half a brain would of said say send them back we're they come from

Under maritime law, the boats from North Africa can be returned to the port they left from, or to the nearest port. If naval ships got to them quickly, it would be perfectly legal to escort them back to Libya - obviously, this is too risky for unarmed commercial ships, who are responding to distress calls (as they are required to), but there isn't, in theory at least, any reason why the Royal Navy or the Italian Coast Guard can't just tow them back to where they came from.

In theory.........in reality, European policy seems to be "don't bother trying to smuggle yourself in - we'll send a boat to pick you up and drop you off ! Free of charge, of course. No, honestly, don't mention it !"

My father in law was in the Royal Navy years ago, spent a lot of time on patrol boats out of Hong Kong.....the Chinese refugees used to try and get across and the Chinese navy would blast them, my father in law always says "these poor fuckers had nothing so we would blast the Chinese navy at every opportunity and try and save these people".........so there it is, it's in our nature to help folk but the fuckers we have here already have taken the piss.

It's a conundrum, that's for sure.

No-ones going to shoot them unfortunately,a mandatory IQ test with those scoring below 100 being sent back would work, very few Africans would pass let alone whole families.

we are supposed to be a meritocracy aren't we?

I think it's justifiable that the same standards apply to immigration.

I think as soon as we start talking about sinking immigrant ships we lose all credibility in a debate. I think it's possible to take a firm stance without having to kill innocents.

As shown in your example Wilf, generally we are a compassionate people. (As an aside your father in law sounds like he would have a few great stories to share having served in the RN at such a time).

I'm not sure exactly how great the magnitude of this particular problem is but a European maritime force could be deployed with marines forcibly boarding all suspect ships and turning them back to their place of origin. Zero tolerance, no exemptions for any ships that can't satisfactorily prove a legitimate purpose. This sort of thing is bread and butter to the RN, they do it day in day out in the Gulf of Aden/Indian Ocean and the Caribbean. Pathetically few frigates and a weak international impetus though probably won't see this done properly.

There's a saying don't hate the players hate the game. You can't blame anyone for wanting and trying to get a better life for themselves or their kids the trouble is we shouldn't be paying for it because of soft arse politicians an the eu. Stop it being worth it and most of them will stop coming.
