Slippery_Weasel 460
Hi All, I inherited this rod a while back along with a load of course fishing gear (I dont do course fishing). I've not used it yet but was thinking about using it as just a spare boat rod as it looks fairly sturdy. It doesnt strike me as massively good quality but its clearly fairly old so before it get exposed to salt water/elements and generally gets wrecked I thought it might be worth asking. Anybody recognise it, what are the chances of it being worth anything/an antique? thanks for looking Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
I'm no expert but it does look like split cane (photos are a bit blurry) with brass fittings and ceramic rings so it might be worth something but I'd imagine salt water wouldn't do it any favours. Quote Link to post
Wullz 408
My uncle is right into coarse fishing and he has something similar to that on his wall, dunno about using it in the salt, think it must be worth saving? Quote Link to post
Mister Gain 1,764
Can't really tell from the photo wether it is split cane or not. If it does not have a hexagonal cross section it could well be made of solid Greenheart wood. Other woods were used to make rods though, Mahogany, Hickory and Elm. Sometimes the tip section would be made of Lancewood as it was more resilient to splintering when under pressure. As for its value, you would have to take it to an expert/collecter of antique tackle or an auction house. Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
Generally old rods are not worth anything. It needs to be something 'special' to be worth much. Edited July 7, 2015 by J Darcy 1 Quote Link to post

Slippery_Weasel 460
Thanks for the responses. Sounds like the best option is not to use it on boat. I will take some better pics. Would be surprised if it would be worth any more than the hassle of organising for it to be sold Quote Link to post
paulus 26
sold a B James and sons Richard Walker Avon Number 4 for good money but most are not worth selling, the craftsmanship is worth far more than the market prices, stick it on the wall or use it Quote Link to post
Slippery_Weasel 460
Some better pics although its on the wall now. The three eyelets nearest the tip are all ceramic Quote Link to post
