Trev70 5,185
You certainly like a certain type Trev, nice dogs. My first ever lurcher was out of a 3/4 greyhound 1/4 collie dog to a Patterdale X Whippet bitch called Slipper who sadly died young. I replaced her with a seasoned collie X greyhound cross who taught me how to hunt instead of the other way around. If there was no chance of it being caught she wouldn't chase it. Now, at the time I was a youngster who wanted everything I seen in the bag. So to have a bitch who'd stand looking, on the lamp, 20 foot from a rabbit who was 5 foot from the burrow was frustrating but she taught me that that was how to lamp. I was hard on her and she was often lamped after a day out with the terriers and that could happen 3 or 4 times a week. I have a January hare stuffed that she caught on her 4th attempt. The first 3 times she'd ran the hare the hare had beat her by getting under a gate into some covert. On the 4th try "Windy" headed for the gate, turned the hare down the field and caught it. Not a world beater by any means and even after 30 years I still think of that cunning move every time I drive by that field. Cheers mate, 36 years on and still my type of lurcher, my 7 month old bitch. Edited July 7, 2015 by Trev70 4 Quote Link to post

Will1234 17
Mine was a Russell what a dog I started him on rabbits by 2 he was bolting foxes everytime I took him out. He caught loads in cover and held them till I got there lol tried breeding off him but left it too late. I remember once I lost him and went home I was only a kid my mum went over our local park. She found him in a container with a fox he was red roar. That dog taught me so much about hunting I could write a book. Quote Link to post

mad4it 694
my first dog was the family dalmation, she was great at catching rabbits, My first working dog was a jrt that i used as a bushing dog for the dalmation for about two years than my uncle gave me a collie x grey which was like a shadow and lit the fire for running dogs saying that the jrt lit the fire for terriers, when i met my wife i took on her border x lakeland that was about 26 years ago. As the saying go once either terriers or running dog get in to your blood you cant get them out. good tread Quote Link to post
Bosun11 537
The family mongrel collie that could catch rabbits anywhere and then a grew (whippet/ greyhound) came along and changed my life. Quote Link to post
Accip74 7,112
Aged 10 I was allowed to call up a guy called Kelly to order one of his bedlington/whippet cross pups. A blue & white pup duly arrived & I called him Jim. Within 2 years I'd probably ruined the dog & started to get bored with him, neglecting him in favour of my dad's earth dogs. Failing to heed my dad's warnings.......I got home from school one day, went up to his kennel & he was gone....... Once I'd wiped the tears away.........A valuable lesson was learnt..... 1 Quote Link to post
jcm 2,327
Mother has a Pom x Scottish terrier used to take it ferreting with me and a bit of bushing she wasn't very good if I'm honest but used to be fun she probably I u caught about 12 rabbits and a rat. I used to always ask my mother for a patterdale terrier as at the time I had never seen a runner work anyway wasn't aloud one. finushed work one day and was very surprised to find a little lurcher pup no older than 10 weeks old messing around with my younger brother turns out someone at her work had her and wasn't aloud her in the housing unit so the rspca had the dog and was asking staff who worked with my mother if anyone wanted the pup every one said no even me mother till it looked at her with that puppy gaze. The bitch only lived till she was 16 month old she got hit by a car whilst out lamping, she was just starting to come into her own and would of probably made a half decent bitch but I can gaurentee if a more experienced person had her she would of been a very handy bitch 1 Quote Link to post

matt1979 766
My first official dog was really my dad's dog but as it was brought for my birthday it felt like I owned it but was about 8 at the time. She was a terrier, jrt x fell type, called her Peggy. She was bred by my uncle and I can remember going to see the litter like it was yesterday. We picked her up on my birthday at 7 week old she was a tiny brown red dot. She grew into a good little dog an work alongside my dad's lurchers. She was only allowed in the kitchen but would sneak in to the living room in the evenings and ly underneath my armchair next to the kitchen. I would give her a little stroke and she would stay their. As soon as anyone got up to go to the kitchen she would slink off back into her bed in the kitchen. My old man worked shifts so I was on after school walk duties of an evening and we mooched about over the local footie fields or hours. She lived to about 12 and I can sadly remember when she started to have fits towards the end broke my heart at the time. She was one Of many of the dogs we had in my youth that I feel have enriched my life and continue to do so. I always feel A bit sorry for kids especially who have never had the joy a dog can bring to a house. I have 2 step kids and I honestly feel (although) they don't really get out with me (working the dogs) the dogs add alot to family life atb 3 Quote Link to post
dytkos 17,793
A little cairn x jet cross for my 8th birthday from an accidental mating. The owner was my junior school RI teacher lol By the time I was 12/13 we were out ratting up the brook with a garden trowel ffs Never caught many but by f**k it it sparked something inside me and I owe him a lot for that initial "baptism" My parents had to have him put down at about 8 after he had a big growth on his anus. The "big lads" around us used to call him "arsehangout" lol RIP Patch Cheers, D. Quote Link to post
