What Was Your First Dog?

As the title says, what was your first working dog? Just write a little piece about it, how old you were etc... will be quite interesting to see peoples responses and experiences with their first dog.

As I still live at home I haven't yet owned a working dog but will be something that I will look to do when I move out in the next year or so, hence the reason I haven't contributed to the topic myself.

this was my first lurcher my dad brought me for Christmas about 5/6 years ago along with a lamp but unfortunately i was only a young lad (around 15) and was more interested in girls and drinking cider lol shame as he was a nice dog im unsure of the xs but i dident have the time for him so my dad rehomed him,,,,,how things change i spend alll my spare time with my dogs now and don't drink lol

My first dog not a working dog as such but my childhood companion did catch a fair numbers of pheasants when roaming round the woods and the odd duck down the canal, i think he put a spark in my head to get a lurcher in later years.

mine was 30 odd years ago, my 1st lurcher a beddy x whippet x grey , it was shit, worst dog ever had , it nearly put me of running dogs for good .But since then ive seen few straight beddy x greys no whippet , that were not bad dogs good pot fillers and ok on foxes, so it was ether just my dog, or the beddy x grey better with out the whippet in there .?

I had a standard schnauzer when I was around ten. Smart athletic dog as I remember him. Crunched everything he caught, and was good on our most popular game species in Detroit. (rats)

Had a few famly dogs growing up collie x dalmatian a springer spaniel and a a little jack Russel terrier but My own 1st dog is a rescue staffy couldn't ask for a better dog not really a working dog but it's hard to keep him out of the bushes he loves to chases in rabbits. I just got my first lurcher he's a collie bull greyhound

I was brought up round dogs my step dad was a terrier man an he got a lurcher rough coated dog called gin he was being starved by a young lad my step dad used to let me feed them with him I took to gin an the bound we built was one I don't think I'll ever experience again he wouldn't leave my side when out an off the lead he turned into a very good dog on all game I'll never forget this dog along as I live I only know him as a lurcher no specific breeds but what a dog RIP old boy

My first hunting dog was a Springer that I stole from a traveller site he was in shite state but after a few weeks he turned out a fine lump I found out who used to own him and he used him as a gun dog so brought him out with my mates da an he was a great worker smash trough any cover and thick ice and retrieve to hand but he gave the deaf ear alot and was thick as shit but I loved him

You certainly like a certain type Trev, nice dogs.

My first ever lurcher was out of a 3/4 greyhound 1/4 collie dog to a Patterdale X Whippet bitch called Slipper who sadly died young.

I replaced her with a seasoned collie X greyhound cross who taught me how to hunt instead of the other way around. If there was no chance of it being caught she wouldn't chase it. Now, at the time I was a youngster who wanted everything I seen in the bag. So to have a bitch who'd stand looking, on the lamp, 20 foot from a rabbit who was 5 foot from the burrow was frustrating but she taught me that that was how to lamp. I was hard on her and she was often lamped after a day out with the terriers and that could happen 3 or 4 times a week.

I have a January hare stuffed that she caught on her 4th attempt.

The first 3 times she'd ran the hare the hare had beat her by getting under a gate into some covert. On the 4th try "Windy" headed for the gate, turned the hare down the field and caught it.

Not a world beater by any means and even after 30 years I still think of that cunning move every time I drive by that field.

Great memories Neil , ones that can never be replaced. My first Lurcher was a big collie cross called flash , no world beater but as loyal a dog as u could ask for . Remember the first fox he caught , I gave him a round of applause, much to the amusement of my mates , still get abuse about it to this day .
