tomburras 2,729
well I rarely go fly fishing but I have gone for a 3 day fly fishing trip on the river U R E in Ripon and so far I have only caught a chublet. I have tried the dry fly white moth in size 12, 14, 18 and grey dusters. And also tried goldhead nymphs and shrimps and im really struggling! there is literally trout topping and jumping all the time including behind me while wading! Has anyone got any advice on what to try? apart from my worm rod lol. Iv got limited signal but ill have a drive out and check for replies later. Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
Firstly, if you're using dry fly you don't want ANY drag at all. Apply sinkant to the last couple of foot of leader. See what fly life there is about and try to copy it. At this time of year you might want to think about something chunky and yellow to replicate dung flies. or the jack of all trades, the black knat, tied thickly and with a white wing . Also, just check that the fish aren't feeding on emergers or buzzers. if they are then you won't catch on the dry. In fly fishing it's all about matching the hatch....good luck. 2 Quote Link to post

tomburras 2,729
finally more success I had a small (half pound) brownie and a dace, on that same fly in the picture. the fly is tiny and Im really suprised what you catch them on. the water I caught them in was literally only 2 foot deep and fast. its been a steep learning curve this fly fishing! 1 Quote Link to post

jonnie bravo 572
Klinks are great. The klink and dink is a great fish catcher but if your not so confident casting then I'd stick to the single fly. I doubt you will struggle rising fish with a single dry at this time of year, especially in an evening as the light fades. The single Dr is great fun! Something that helped me last year was a long soft rod, coupled with a very fine diameter tippet, 2-3lb bs, 0.012-0.016 dia, and don't be shy with the length, this will really help with the drag issue. Don't bother trying to decrease it though, it will float like a cork no matter what you do! Doesn't put the fish off mind you 1 Quote Link to post

Doesn't put the fish off mind you Thanks for that I did try it but in the end went back to a single fly as I I found it landed on the water a bit gentler - my takes seemed to be within a few seconds of landing on the water and I thaught on it's own it landed a bit more naturally. I'll give it another go and a bit more time next time. Quote Link to post

Hi jok I didn't have any of them but tonight I'm going to have a sit down and order a few dry flies to add to my box. I'll get some of those ordered thank you. I'm thinking of giving the river aire a go on the fly, has anyone tried this? 1 Quote Link to post
