gnasher16 30,025
I agree with Brindle as much as we should always try to tip the odds in our favour breeding wise so we should also do that with the litter infront of us......some people are just gifted with an eye for a pup,me i never was so always had to study litters to seek out the best made pups......i found it a thoroughly enjoyable and interesting part of keeping dogs to be honest i would get a bit obssessive and keep records, write down notes etc.......by 7/8 weeks id be confident in the pup/s i was holding back were the most vigorous, intense and healthiest pups of the litter. 3 Quote Link to post
dare 1,103
Did it work out in terms of percentages for how many dogs you raised from pup and how many turnt out good? I actually have never gone to a litter and picked out a pup have had pups but just not from as early as that. Quote Link to post

The dogs are a passion that becomes a bit of an obsession...scrutinizing litters all a part of it...in my opinion...but saying all that...the last pup i was gifted years back...was the only male in the litter...sometimes in life you just gotta take a gamble lol Quote Link to post
delboy_187 902
I always bring a toy or teddy normally splits the bagels from the could be's the one pup that pushes every one around jumping over his pals i find there normaly the hardest to train too headstrong. Second or third in line for me depends who looks better. How often do you get to look and first choice of a full litter unless it's your own or your dog sired the litter. 1 Quote Link to post

AKA-BRINDLE 879
. How often do you get to look and first choice of a full litter unless it's your own or your dog sired the litter. Planning mate...as simple as that...last pup i got...i waited years until a certain dog was put over a certain bitch...got myself to the head of the queue so to speak Quote Link to post

Its not always possible of course but its all part of the benefits in getting dogs off people you know and trust.....even if id not bred the litter myself id still want to see the pups regularly from about 2 weeks old....id want to know the first to open their eyes the pups who take the best teats, the first to stand etc.....right through to first to raise in the morning and last to fall to sleep later on.......and every habit and personality trait in between.......as we,ve said it can quickly become unhealthily obssessive Edited August 3, 2015 by gnasher16 Quote Link to post
dare 1,103
End of the day cant be no real way of telling if a pup will be a good dog or everyone would save themselves alot of time. If there was an amazing breeding and only a shy pup would anyone not take the gamble on it? I would still take the pup just make sure i put more time n effort into the dog. Being honest I would of anyway not like I ever kept loads of dogs. Had a dog from someone who had alot of dogs and compare to mine it was like the dog had been abused. Even called the bloke up but he explained the situation but was real shy, was lovely watching him come out his shell though n after a while was like a different dog. Quote Link to post

dare 1,103
Forgot to say i saw a nice white staff when out today. Came running over to my dog n thought ah here we go. Was good as gold though probably most laid back dog ive ever seen. Anyway talking with the owner as we walked and she tells me how much she walks the dog, believe her aswell as i always see her n the dogs her life. Funny thing is its really overweight, bragging to me about the junk she gives it. Even has a roast on a sunday with all the gravey. Nothing wrong in spoiling the dog abit but amount she walks the dog it should never be fat. Quote Link to post

Everyones different i guess, if offered a pup and it was the last one and a runt i gotta admit id feel as if ive drawn the short straw lol. Quote Link to post
