Broken To Sheep?

Recommended Posts

The last pic? Black and tan?

She is 3/4 beagle, 1/8 teckle, 1/16 cocker and 1/16 russel.

Funnily enough she did spend a small period of time moon lighting as a collie and helping me round up sheep. Not her natural forte, but she IS quite handy in the pens, pushing them a long a race. If only I could teach her to bay on command, she would be a true multi purpose farm dog!

She has been a good little hound for me mate. Wouldn't suit a lot of people, and there would be better dogs for some jobs. But for what I do, she does the trick. Also she is a proper little character with a voice far bigger than her stature.

Boris is good with people, but he doesn't like dogs very much. He's ok to gather in with the collie, but in a pen he just thinks 'f**k you' and batters the shit out of any dog that comes near.

Mind you, i've a few ewes that are a bit sharp with their lambs about.

She sounds great, I've bin unsure about what x to get for bushing, what i don't want is something that will try and go to ground, just want it for all above ground work, a springer spaniel may be the final choice but I'm still researching as i like terrier x's but its just the going to ground situation,

Boris shore looks in fine condition.

As you say ideation returning from a run out of sight when sheep are about is another reason they must be 100%, some dogs cant help but have a go when they missed what they've ran and are passing by sheep on the way back

My BullX bitch is steady as a rock with sheep if I'm with her but if we are walking for example through thick bracken and a sheep bolts and she's not close, I wouldn't trust her 100%, I think her prey drive is just so strong that when she's in the zone and hunting cover, anything that breaks out is gonna get chased especially if Daddy isn't there to bollock her! :)

I usually do a lot of hunting ferns when sheep are about getting the dogs use to them bolting !!

Last summer a very young lamb bolted out infront of my blue bitch out of ferns she's didn't move just carried on walking heart in mouth though !! This Hancock pup has been my hardest to break !! She doesn't chase them she tries to herd them to me she doesn't know but can still see her stare at them something I need to work on !!

Was a little easier for me as both my bitches (terrier and lurcher) were born on farms that had sheep so already mostly done when I got em.
Male lurcher very sensible and has always known what he can and cant chase naturally (with a bit of guidance) lol. Lamped him through sheep many times without a problem.
Have to be careful this time of year though when dogs are not working week in week out and an unseen sheep gets up out of cover, they sometimes want to give chase and unchecked they may well do.

Cheers, D.
