charlie caller 3,654
Worth a go I suppose, you never know, out of interest what does your 99 prefer? so far in mine it would appear, tight fitting light pellet, = power, consistency, accuracy, heavy or loose fitting = crap power and consistency Quote Link to post

I'm got some British ones to try like marksman, champion and I haven't tried eley wasp in it yet. I'll weigh them and give them a go over the chrono and test them for accuracy. When I've done that I'll post my findings and put some pics up when I've got time in the next week or two. 1 Quote Link to post
jonnie bravo 572
Well lads bought myself a chrono (combro thing) so I will post up what it tells me about the 99 soon. 1 Quote Link to post
jonnie bravo 572
Had the 99 on the 20yds range tonight! The allen keys came with me this time.... But I didn't end up needing them. The rifle seems to be settling down nicely now, 5p size ragged one hole groups on 4x mag, lovely. It seems to like the JSB exacts, so can't complain with that- but I will be trying some other pellets through it, namely exact express and h&n extreme hunters. Bring on the chrono I say, can't wait to see what it's putting out. Quote Link to post

Not as well finished as the old ones and a smoother finish. I'll be doing a comparison to see how they perform in the 99. 2 Quote Link to post
Rimfireboy! 1,463
Well, after much messing with different scopes this afternoon, I didn't get around to any accuracy tests today. I did have time to weigh some pellets and persuaded the 99 to spit a few over the chrono. The original 'eley wasps' weighed an average of 14.5 grains and with an average velocity of 597fps gave 11.48 ft lb energy. Next I weighed some of the new 'wasp' pellets and these too averaged 14.5 grains and an average of 604.8 fps @ 11.75 ft lbs energy. Champion copper waisted weighed 12.2 grains and at 585.7 fps they were producing 9.34 ft lbs energy. Marksman pointed weigh a very consistent 15.4 grains and at an average velocity of 541.7 fps, they had 10.04 ft lbs energy. I put a few heavyweights through the 99 as well. H&N rabbit magnums weighed 25.2 grains and at 343.3 fps they were only running at 6.6 ft lbs energy. I also found some eley magnums that were given to me by someone who bought them for his theoben eliminator, but found that they didn't suit it so I thought I'd give them a go. They weighed in at 30.2 grains and were very tight in the breech, they sped across the chrono at a screaming 224.3 fps and that worked out at a staggering 3.37 ft lbs of energy. Accuracy test to follow if anybody's interested,lol... 2 Quote Link to post
jonnie bravo 572
Nice Rimfireboy, I was expecting those heavy pellets to keep their energy.... They really fell off the scale didn't they? My chrono has arrived safe and sound so expect some testing over the next few days. 1 Quote Link to post
Rimfireboy! 1,463
Just set up at 25 yards, sort of. My old Burris scope ran out of upward adjustment and POI was still an inch low but I easily managed five shot groups that could be covered by a penny with the new 'wasp' pellets. Not tried any others yet as I ran out of time. I need to swap scopes first anyway. 1 Quote Link to post
jonnie bravo 572
My Bushnell ran out of adjustment too, I've shimmed it and it's spot on now, got some chrono results for those that are interested too, not what I expected at all! Quote Link to post
jonnie bravo 572
heres the chrono results folks. 5 shot strings, pellet type, feet per second, ft/lbs H&N hunter extreme 9.26 (9.3 on chrono) 1. 748 ? 2. 741 11.34 3.749 11.59 4.738 11.24 5. 746 ? jonnie bravo 572
sooooo..... out of all that, the superfields showed best at 9 fps spread, the H&N close behind at 10 fps spread, these were the tightest fitting and heaviest pellets. The accupels were the worst, these were the loosest pellets out of all too, and the lightest. The JSB's suprised me how bad they were as they group on a 5p at 20 yards. Very impressed with the guns power, I was expecting a lot lower power results to be honest!!! So well chuffed with that. I think I'm going to opt for the H&N's as these will make a fab hunting pellet, so I'm deffo going to buy a tin of these, and consider the superfields too. I think I will have another look on pellet perfect and have a look around some more possible pellet options. This little .177 99 is really packing a punch!! Quote Link to post
Rimfireboy! 1,463
That's a good output jonnie, especially being .177. 1 Quote Link to post
Tron 173
Hey Rimfire, why dont you try the Wasp in 5.5 ? should be faster than the 5.6 wasps. Edited August 2, 2015 by Tron Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
I will be very interested in an accuracy test, the 5.6 wasps in my .22 99s were amazingly consistent and accurate, 11.6 ftlbs, I have not tried the new ones yet, I now have the added pleasure of the scope on the 99 being knackered, it will print a tight 3-5 shot group, tap the scope turret and the group shifts 2-3 inches in any direction it feels like, but the rifle is settling down nicely now, very smooth, producing a nice 11.2 ftlbs with superdomes. 1 Quote Link to post
bernie67 35
very interesting jonnie those crono results.good power for .177. out of interest how did it feel? i.e a little bit jumpy. Quote Link to post
