No | Price you paid?: Not Indicated | Rating: 0 Pros: Second ingredient is a named meat product Cons: Inadequate meat content, low quality ingredients, controversial filler The first ingredient in this food is wheat. Wheat, although apparently a whole grain, is believed by many to be the leading cause of food allergies in dog food products. As 'wheat feed', later on the ingredient list, it is a grain fragment and byproduct we consider primarily filler. Maize (corn) is a difficult to digest grain of limited value in dog food, and which is also commonly associated with food allergies. Even if these had been decent grain, however, we would still note that grains are not a natural foodstuff for canines and are of very low quality compared to meat (on which dog foods should instead be based). "Prairie meal" - better known as corn gluten meal - is also low quality. This is defined as that part of the commercial shelled corn that remains after the extraction of the larger portion of the starch, gluten, and term by the processes employed in the wet milling manufacture of corn starch or syrup. In plain English, the remains of corn after most of the nutritious bits have been removed. The second ingredient is the only true meat ingredient in the food. There is a second meat ingredient, "fish" 10th on the ingredient list, but this is far too far down to make any significant contribution to the overall meat content of the food (and in any case, is an ingredient inclusive of water content which, once dehydrated, is likely to be an extremely minor ingredient). Beet pulp is a controversial filler. It is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required. Powered by: ReviewPost PHPCopyright 2006 All Enthusiast, Inc.
sandymere 8,263
Sorry CJ but wherever you got that from it’s not too good and certainly has never been near a dietitian or anyone who wanted to bother checking their facts rather than writing to suit some Disneyfied make believe type of hippy tree hugging fashion hype. “Wheat, although apparently a whole grain, is believed by many to be the leading cause of food allergies in dog food products.” Alas that’s rubbish, meats are the biggest cause of allergies in dogs, wheat/gluten allergy is very rare in both dogs and humans, all I can guess when they say “.believed by many” they mean believed by many twits who obviously don’t know anything about allergies……. “we would still note that grains are not a natural foodstuff for canines and are of very low quality compared to meat.” How can it be said that dogs, which have proven adaptions to carbohydrate in their diets, which would have been grains, shouldn’t have them in their diet, that’s just not rational. Then one must ask why they are lower quality? A balanced diet contains balance hence each is of equal quality, each is as important as the rest that’s what a balanced diet means lol. "causing stress to kidney and liver in the process". How does it cause stress to the kidneys and liver?? Basically that’s just made up lol. "We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food". Back on the imaginary allergies again lol “There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required.” Such as?? Alas it’s based on hearsay and a fluffy bunny attitude to diet rather than a realistic view of the available knowledge. It’s all about balance and the whole, basically a dog needs an appropriate balance of protein, fat and carbohydrate.

It does sound a lot like so many women you hear talking about their many allergies, which for the most part are a figment of their imaginations. Talking of emotive non logic. I go on a gardening forum and one woman on there was saying how she does not grow in plastic pots because she wants to be 'organic'?? So I asked her how does she think the water gets to her house? Through plastic pipes. What is the majority of the food in her cupboard wrapped in? She said 'we all draw a line in different places' WTF ??
