mushroom 13,253
Does anybody hunt or walk their lurcher alongside you riding a horse? I want to get dickhead used to them but have a concern that he's older than my other dogs were when they got used to them. Quote Link to post
mushroom 13,253
Mate I love horses and yes this girl is also into them. Not only that I'm off camping this weekend and the plan is to hire a couple of horses. My concern is my other dogs were always around them so there was no real training to follow, they just did. This twat is 11 months and gets spooked by a loud fart so wondering if it's a terrible idea to put him on a long line at first. Quote Link to post
mushroom 13,253
Had him amongst them and he's not too bad, bit wary mind. I've just not had him out while riding so not sure if he'll follow or fuuck off Someone suggested a long line but that seems incredibly dangerous to me! Quote Link to post
trenchfoot 4,243
a long line, a lurcher and an horse. not going to end well It'll end up like something from empire strikes back Edited June 29, 2015 by trenchfoot 4 Quote Link to post

neil cooney 10,416
Are the horses used to dogs ? It takes a lot of work to get the two used to each other and one kick from a horse will usually end any dogs career or life. 1 Quote Link to post
mushroom 13,253
The horses are steady according to the stable owner. I'm not to worried about him getting kicked if I'm honest. He's too much of a fanny to get anywhere near enough Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
You'd be surprised. A kick from a horse wont just teach a dog not to come near, it could kill it. Quote Link to post
mushroom 13,253
No I mean he won't get that close I've been around horses all my life I'll judge the temp when I meet the horse and like I said a kick is the least of my worries as opposed to him doing a born free and making his way to France Quote Link to post
bird 9,982
You'd be surprised. A kick from a horse wont just teach a dog not to come near, it could kill it. 100%, had kick on my leg from a hoss, feck me it nearly broke it , was that bad had to be taken home, couldn't walk. never trust horse with other animals or people. I think a dog who keeps his distance from them, the best ting for the very reasons above .suppose if it was hound (foxhound etc) which is brought up with horses, and vice/ verser its no prob at all , but really for me its if the hoss is ok with dogs, not the other way round , as above kick in head one dead dog . Maximus Ferret 2,063
Possibly when you meet the horse you might get someone else to either lead the dog while you ride or ride the horse while you lead the dog. This could give you a few minutes to assess what's likely to happen. The dog could surprise you if he thinks you're in danger from the horse. I've had a dog of mine latch onto a horses tail. Must have looked hilarious but wasn't too funny at the time as I tried not to get airborn. (This dog was rock steady with horses when I wasn't riding). The danger point is likely to be when you change pace (walk to trot, trot to canter etc.) Edited June 29, 2015 by Maximus Ferret 2 Quote Link to post
mushroom 13,253
I reckon that will be the sticky point too mate, that change in tempo could send him bonkers Quote Link to post
jeemes 4,498
irrelevant I know but Ive seen pics of Kossaks with Borzois on leashes..They used to exercise Greyhounds in this country on horseback.. I think its a great idea,,,wish I had the bottle to get on a horse..The horse would need to be game aswell mind.. Good luck with it anyway,Im sure it will work out for you. Quote Link to post
