ruggers13 268
How old can you start grafting your ferret kits Hi pal ive got my first set of kits this year i have had adults before so i was thinking to work them at about 9 months old Quote Link to post
krawnden 1,036
I usually start mine off around 5 months. They're pretty much full grown by then so can't see anything to be gained by waiting. My theory is that a wild polecat will be hunting independently by then so a ferret ought to be ready to start learning its trade. Quote Link to post
The one 8,488
No excactly graft but start them as soon as you get them in pipes in the garden picking them up putting them down . putting collars on them and letting them run about hearing a bit of noise , then when you reckon there large enough and mature enough they dont spend half of there first outing sitting inside the first hole scratching at the collar and flying back into the hole and you cant pick them up > 3 Quote Link to post
rabbit demon 302
I start the hobs at 5 month and the jills at 7 or 8. Depends how big and how keen they are. I get them properly nip trained first so they dont bite you when your digging and having to put your hand down burrows. Quote Link to post

The one 8,488
I'm of the option there like training a dog the more you put in the more you will get out of a working career that could last ten years plus Quote Link to post
pie-eater 377
Last kits I had I started in there second season which I think is ideal, only thing is it means a long wait to find out if theyre any good. Quote Link to post
krawnden 1,036
What d'you think the advantage of waiting till their second season is? Quote Link to post
Fly The Boy 339
5 or 6 months in small burrows. Quote Link to post
pie-eater 377
What d'you think the advantage of waiting till their second season is? Just to make sure theyre mature enough, if I didn't have any adults to work with I would probably start them a lot earlier. I think a lot of ferrets are ruined because they are started to early and take a beating before they are ready. Quote Link to post
The one 8,488
Like dogs it's handier if you bring on a replacement before you need it and can enter any kit with it mother till your really happy it's entering , then after its working solo I check the burrow with a older ferret too see if it's missed any rabbits , it time consuming but you know if there doing the job ,then by the second season you have a ready made worker Quote Link to post
Arry 22,182
I go with 5 months as Krawnden said running them through small burrows to start with just a few to start with building up slowly. Then checking with a experience ferret. Cheers Arry Quote Link to post
