Popular Post Bryan 1,362
It wouldn't be right to let the day pass without saying Tommy O'Reilly died today. There's many people better placed and versed than me to remember him, but i'll give it a start. Within his own lifetime Tommy had become a legend and on meeting him any expectations you may have had would have been easily exceeded. He spent his life in pursuit of his passion with hounds and terriers hunting Fox, Hare, Badger and Otter. He hunted a pack of Harriers and the Cork City Otterhounds (before they changed to Mink) and followed foxhounds, beagles, harriers and the Cork City's all his life. He had uncompromising respect for the animals he hunted and hunted with, and looked at most things a little differently than most. Perhaps this outlook help him breed great terriers as he did. With terriers he set the foundations of the various lines of white dogs that we have in Cork today. Some that he bred were The General, Tess, Sam and The Blindman. The biggest disappointment for me with the "terrier men of Ireland" book was that Tommy, was constrained by a questionnaire Such a criminal waste of an opportunity, he could have filled a book on and hunting topic and historic hunting characters. He hunted with Johnny Richardson and Ronnie Wallace, introduced his fist to Charles Parker on the river and would have been well know and respected by any huntsman in Munster. At 78 he died with terriers and hounds in his kennels and some game fowl on his yard and a loving wife of many years, 6 children and many grand children. A life well lived.
