Any Outboard Mechanics

Recommended Posts

Hey up lads any of you blokes up on outboard engines, I have re_built a old mercury outboard its a 1971 2 stroke 7.5 HP engine, with the thunderbolt ignition, I am getting it ready, for my annual jaunt to the lakes, I have had the engine, for a couple of yr, and it ran for a couple of times when I first got it then it packed up, anyway I got around to stripping down, and rebuilding it this year, anyway I replaced the cranckshaft end seals and bearings, new rings, and rebuilt the carb. and changed the points insulators, and rebuilt it, I did have a problem, getting a wiring diagram for that specific engine, but now have a really good spark at the plugs,I made one mistake, by getting the cylinders mixed up when I wired the coils, and the engine back fired, I corrected that today and it started, I know it will need carb adjustments, but the thing is it broke the top woodruff key, which I hope was caused when the engine back fired, so will get hold of a new one asap, the thing is I cannot see where the timing is adjusted, the fly wheel has no adjustment, at all and I have searched it in detail, it has no swith box or even a condenser, the throttle advances the timing when it's accelerated, so was wondering if any of you could point me in right direction, I am hoping, the issue has been sorted, with getting the cylinders and coils in right order, as when it started today, it did so first pull and ran for a good minute or so,until the key went when I tried to restart it, as said I am hoping I had weakened the key with the back fire. any info would help lads
