koomber 10
I'm looking to move my 3 ferrets outside to the garden after them being indoors since I got them. I'll just be moving their cage out to the shed since its a large ferret nation one. I'm planning giving them an outside space to play in that they can get to via a tunnel. Just a nice lowish frame setup like a lot of people on here have. At the moment the outside space would be on grass and I'd like to keep it that way, but I've been told that ferrets are hardy diggers so I think I'll need something to stop them. Any suggestions for what would be good to put on the bottom of the run to stop them getting out? I've seen people put welded metal mesh on the base but I'm not sure if they could hurt their feet or if it might rust. Would I have to lay slabs? They're not working ferrets (one of them seems to be part draft excluder) so I like the idea of them getting grass on their feets. Quote Link to post
krawnden 1,036
If you want them to be on grass but don't want to have a mesh base to the run you're only option would be to bury something vertically all the way round at the base of the run. Weldmesh, metal sheeting, concrete blocks etc. Doesn't really matter what it is, so long as it's ferretproof and permanent (ie won't rot like timber would). I suspect 12 inches would be deep enough but wouldn't want to swear to it, never having housed 'em like this myself. Probably safer with 18 inches? Quote Link to post
BIGLURKS 874
The setup I used too have was a 4x4 frame but made it 1m high you would be surprised how much they like going higher I had it sitting on slabs with a couple of bags of soil on top of the slabs with some grass growing in it but the grass dosnt last long they just love digging it up and line the wood if you use wood with plastic or some sort mine only lasted a year so make the bottom out of steel or some thing or bricks higher then the soil Quote Link to post
The one 8,467
The only thoughts I would have is grass growing threw earth could harbour diesease I would slab it and cover it with a couple of inches of bark etc and let the rain wash threw it washing anything away Quote Link to post
koomber 10
Thanks for the feedback. Didn't realise there was a risk of disease from the ground. Sound like a solid base of slabs would be the best wau forward Quote Link to post
The one 8,467
I reckon there's a risk of disease from a build up of germs in the soil , or soil sickness that's why your advised to rotate crops ,animals etc Quote Link to post
