staffiretrieve 2
Hi all, right, the Inlaws have a 4 yr old jrt bitch. She's been unwell for around a month but is really deteriorating now. It started as breathing strange and being lethargic and smelly breath, she went vets had her throat and nose flushed and antibiotics to no avail, she then went back for X-Rays and fluid was found in her chest cavity which was drained, and more antibiotics, by now she was off her food. She has since had more X-rays and an ultrasound scan and blood test, all have come back clear. She has been given injections to give her an appetite, she is interested in food and chews it but then spits it out. She's now barely eaten for over ten days and is getting v thin. And today spat out cooked liver!! Her teeth are fine!! Two lots of vets are stumped. Does anyone have any suggestions??? We're at a loss..... Thanks in advance, SR. beast 1,884
I don't want to scare you, but ask your vet about cancer of he oesophagus, some of the symptoms you describe tie n with this. I hope I'm wrong, good luck Edited June 18, 2015 by beast
skycat 6,173
Why haven't the vets done an endoscopy of her gullet and stomach?
sandymere 8,263
Do you know if the fluid, pleural effusion, was just on one side? If it was a bilateral plural effusion I would suspect heart failure if unilateral then infection or malignancy though the later would be unusual. Were the liver function tests normal? I imagine they have ruled out lung worm??
mushroom 12,883
Don't want to be the harbinger mate but I put my lurcher down in similar circumstances. Spent thousands and still never found out what was wrong in the end he was so thin I couldn't watch him suffer no more. Hope it all gets better mate
staffiretrieve 2
Forgot to add that she's had a camera down her throat and up her nose, and was was treated for lungworm at the start as this is what I suspected, she's had a scan of her heart and all looks ok although the vets are suggesting she sees a heart specialist ( at a cost of £200 - £400 ) everyone involved is at a loss. She's going back to the vets today, but if nothing changes I'll be surprised if she sees the middle of next wk...
sandymere 8,263
Sounds like it being well investigated, finger crossed they find something treatable.
