bird 9,977
Bear boel are good dogs but again wasted in a yard they are working dogs. Guard dogs are working dogs BUT not for a small yard guard dogs need constant work not chained up in a yard barking at anyone who comes near trying to scare anyone. A dog will only keep minors away a friend of mine his Shepard got a lump hammer through its head and everything taken. true that mate, a dog can only do so much , I ve read few times in the papers where they shot the dogs, or like the above or poisoned them . I still think the best type a vocal dog though either a jack , or gsd as both are vocal to at least warn you , but above no dog will stop scum if they really want to get in . keepdiggin 9,561
I've had shepherds, rotties, Boerboels in Africa but none compare to the American bulldog I have now. Loyal, reads situations and happy to get stuck in when in the field.

A Presa probably has nothing over an American bulldog especially now that the bull is more established and should be some decent breeders about now. In South of Ireland you see plenty of presas and dogo argentinos for sale for less than £ 180. It shows the quality of the dog and the people buying them. That's to say if they're not cross American bulldogs etc..

There's so much shite going round this country with the "presa" label on it that I'd never entertain the idea of buying one that hadn't been freshly imported. A true Presa is the real deal, seriously impressive dogs but I think with guardian breeds as long as you're buying from decent stock the exact breed is down to personal preference, there's no "ultimate" guard breed with the right breeding and training they can all do the same job.

I saw some real presas in the canaries while on holidays a few years ago and they were impressive physically and great temperament. The handler bred only when he required new stock and occasionally exported, if we had of had the time we could have seen his kennels. Only we had a ridgeback and GSD at the time I would have thought about one.
squab 2,875
Can't see any guard dog doing its job attached to the end of a chain, free running your property different story apart from the legal complications
neems 2,406
all the people talking about guard dogs,do you get them professionally trained? i've had a couple and would still want a much more experienced friend available to help and advise when necessary. imagine the feeling of a big Presa or American Bulldog you owned getting hold of an innocent person, maybe even a child and being unable to get it off. neems 2,406
they dont have the same guarding instinct, drive or power. accidents can happen but owning a liability is something else.
