Shannagh Working Terrier,Lurcher, and Whippet Show Sunday 14th June 15

The quiet village of Seaforde, Co Down was awoken bright and early on Sunday morning 14thJune 15, by the sound of trailers and barking dogs, all on their way to the Annual Shannagh Working Lurcher, Terrier and Whippet Dog Show. Seaforde is situated near the village of Clough, Downpatrick, County Down and is surrounded by coastline views to die for. Famous for its tropical gardens and majestic Butterfly House, Seaforde has now the Annual Shannagh Working Lurcher, Terrier and Whippet Dog Show to add to its now long list of summer attractions in this area.

Well what a great day of sunshine, showing, racing and good friendly banter. As the saying goes, “The sun only shines on Gods people “and he certainly gave us the weather we yearned for on Sunday. As this was a new venue this year, it was first class, with plenty of room for ringside parking and a brilliant race track.

There was a big turnout at this show of Country Sports enthusiasts and like minded people from North and South of the border and further afield. By 12noon it was hard to get a parking place near the ring, as the field was full to capacity with Dogs, trailers, and families, all good Canine folk who came out with their families, and all for a days enjoyment away from the trials and tribulations of everyday life.

Thats what I like about dog shows. They take me away into another kind of world for a day, robbing all the ugly food for thought from my mind. As I grow older, these kind of days make me glad to be alive, fit and healthy and able to attend and partake in the shows. Long may it last, as in my case the days are growing shorter.

It was nice to meet up with old friends once again. The Mc Graths, and David and PJ Nolan all travelled up from Carlow, just to be at the Shannagh Show. All the Dublin huntsmen were there also, and Breandan Coleman was there with his winning terrier Borzo. I had some crack with them fellows. Great bunch of lads, and all great Country Sportsmen men. The quality of dogs at the show on Sunday was of a very high standard and a judges nightmare.

All our little people were there, contributing in their own little way, playing on the Bouncy Castle, getting burgers from the burgar stand, and playing around the field with all their little Canine friends. These little people are our sportsmen and women of tomorrow, and will carry on the tradition long after we have passed on.

The showing began at approximately 12.45, followed by racng.

Time passed very quickly , and very soon, Susan Mc Cann was judgeing the childrens handling class. It was priceless to see the smile on Jack Dumigans face, when he won first in the class, as was Finbar Leonard and Cloe Woods who came 2nd and 3rd. In my eyes every child in the ring was a winner on the day and a job well done Susan.

Judging is not an easy job at any time, but you carried out your duties with precision and respect. Many thanks for that.

Three men who organised the racing at Shannagh, worked well as a team and achieved the end product, with a very high degree of efficency. Many thanks to Tom Barry, Mickey Quinn, and Michael Quinn for a great days racing. All races went without a hitch.

Bluebell and Billy Harpur was there clicking away with their cameras, and I took a few Photographs with my mobile. These photographs create lovely happy memories, when looking back in years to come.

And Finally, Finally there are 2 people who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this show a success. Aaron and Lindsey Phillips and your brilliant back up team of helpers. Your show was a roaring success, a credit to you all, and went like clockwork.

**There are two Charities who will benefit from the Shannagh show as follows :

Action Cancer and The National Deaf Childrens Society. What brilliant charities to support with the proceeds of this show, and all very worthy causes.

Many thanks Shannagh for a memorable show, and I am looking forward to more of the same next year.

Just to add, I've never seen anything like the attitude the guys in the vans from the south showed. Standing folded arms at the finish line trying to look menacing at the lurcher(greyhound) racing track. Elite my f***ING arse.

Chill chill dude! I heard it was some wee small fella dressed like a gurka driving a dodgy looking jeep?Someone said he looked like the dwarf from game of thrones?

Think he had a Great Dane with him?

When it heated up a bit he had stripped down to a pink mankini ? . Lol

Aaron said the dude took a wrong turn thought the signs said "dogging" show?

The Tally Ho Dog Show and Raceday Saturday 3rd May 2025
As 7am on Saturday morning 3rd May 2025 rang out loud and clear in our house, I crawled out of bed and thanked god for allowing me another day on this beautiful landscape of ours called the Emerald Isle. With the joys of spring in my heart, Mr Fox away on his summer holidays, the work in the field completed for another season, it was show time again on this side of our Island.
Suddenly the seasons were telling me it was Tally Ho show time of the year again and time to get our Canine friends in the show ring and on the race course, for the start of the summer Dog show and Race Days schedule.
Some of us have had joyous occasions in our families since the last showing season, and some of us may have had great sadness, as fate can throw all sorts of problems in the pathway of life. As we dusted ourselves down after our winter woes, Saturday was a day to leave all our cares of yesterday behind and head to Crumlin for  the Tally Ho  annual dog show and race day.  And what a days enjoyment with our loyal Canine friends that was.
The weather was beautiful, but tinged with an east wind that would cut you in two. As we approached the field, we could see very clearly there was very little parking space left. Each year this show grows bigger and better. Peter Morgan being the caring gentleman he is made sure he kept a parking space for the now 2 senior citizens and of which we were very grateful.
By midday the field was full to capacity.  In the show rings there was a big turnout and a great mix of top quality dogs in all categories. 22 races and 28 children in child handling class.
As I moved around the rings, I met up with some old friends and some new ones too. Michael Reilly travelled up all the way from Tipperary. Yapper Hayes came up from Kilkenny and Stephanie O Connor and family and Mc Grath Family travelled up from Carlow.  All great doggie people and support every show and race day North and South of the border.
Stands were situated around the show ground. Paul Boyd with loads of canine supplies/ Alannah Harpur and her sister with some beautiful Tea Shirts and Mugs and Mary Kate Quinn was there with her amazing art work . What an interesting and talented lady to speak to. There was a burger stand on site and 4 toilets dotted all around the field.
Our children as usual were well cared for by the Tally Ho show organiser Peter Morgan, both in the ring and outside it. Two bouncy castles were on site and inside the ring were trophys, medals and big bags of sweets for every child. A real childrens paradise. Some sleepy we people on Saturday night.
Time waits for nobody. The moment had arrived after the long cold winter to get our Canine friends out of the field and into the show ring and on the Race course.
