Not Broadmoor, but my grandma worked at Rampton, which is the same sort of place, just less infamous than Broadmoor. It was in the late 70s, early 80s, when conditions there were supposedly at their worst. Her favourite story was when there was a christmas party. The patients had a band, but they could only play one song. They played it over and over again, and people never stopped dancing all night.

If you read the Bronson books, there's lots about the hospitals, when they were really rough. Back when the "nurses" were 6-foot rugby players (not my grandma, obviously), wearing army boots and were members of the prison officer's Union. Back then the treat you as a dangerous convict, not someone in need of help and rehabilition.

After reading Bronson's books, some of the thing's he's done, or said he's done, are pretty legendary. I'm no fan of his dirty protests, but he has morals, and would happily give a paedophile a good old kicking.

Unfortunately a lot of the disturbing, and or entertaining things he did were left out of the film. My favourite stories out of all of his books are:

1) Attempting to strangle a child-rapist with his tie when in Rampton. His tie snapped seconds before the man's death, and he survived.

2) Hitting the Cambridge Rapist with a fire-extinguisher.

3) Throwing his chamber pot over an over-zealous prison officer.

4) The best and craziest of all being when he took some Iraqi terrorists hostage, the demanded they call him "General" and made them tickle his feet. For his negotiations, he demanded a plane to Libya, Uzi SMGs, ammunition and an axe. Then he demanded that the hijackers hit home over the head with a metal tray, because he did it to them and wanted to call it quits. That is pretty original.

The amount of taxpayer money he must have cost over the years, and the constant rooftop destructions wouldn't have been cheap. That I'm not a fan of.

Mrs works in mental health...she says you can tell the old patients that had been through the system at calderstones as they had no teeth...the minute they kicked off they took all their teeth out so they couldn't bite staff
