sussex 5,777
having put out the first of the ducks on the ponds the blackbirds found the food almost at once and descended on it by the hundreds ..the amount of food these birds consume has to be seen to be believed ..The plan was to put a gun on each pond , not allow them to feed and knock out as many as possible , we had a few people who wanted to have a go so first thing , which happens to be around 4.15 am , I picked up one of the team on route and made my way over to the farm only to find we were the only two on time .This pissed me of just a bit but we set of to our pond and set up in the hides I built the day before ...A long story cut short we managed to knock a few out , the other guys arrived late , left early & one was a no show ...none of them will get another invite on the crows or the pigeon again .. Any pointers? I don't know about pointers mate , but we have about five ponds that are feed wheat , they were pellet/wheat for a little while and the blacks love it , now it's just wheat but they still pile in for it ..I built a couple of good concealed hides with loads of green stuff , they really do have eyes up there arse, and then just sit it out , we were in the hides for eleven hours so it's no quick fix ..thing is tomorrow their be back in there hundreds , they really are an expensive pain in the arse ..We will just be on the case as much as possible ..Gets even worse when the pheasants go to wood as soon as you hound them in one place they move of to unlimited supplies around the estate ..there is a huge rookery just of our boundary that the old girl who owns it won't let any one touch ..she loves them ...and doesn't pick up the feed bill .. 1 Quote Link to post
sussex 5,777
nice going Rich me and my mate have shot over 400 this year and there still seems to be Hundreds about mainly Jackdaws though. These were mainly rooks , a few crows about half a dozen jackdaws and one magpie that got nosey ! Last week I was shooting them in one of the estate tenants garden were she keeps chickens , shot 31 jackdaws ..in two outings , seems once you get a couple on the ground they can't resist a look & decoy in fairly well ..As you say Owen there are so many about Some of the flocks are huge .. Easy around the 700 mark if not more , you just can't make a dent in them .. Quote Link to post

We were finding Rich that the Jackdaws decoy better than Pigeons when we shoot over the corn stubble like you say they come at a few dozen at a time and most seem to announce their arrival aswell, Had a couple of hours in one of the hides this afternoon and it was mainly the jackdaws that come in , finished with 32 ..24 jacks , 6 crows & only two rooks .
