So Called Friend Ruins Scope

Recommended Posts

So, a 'friend' wanted to try my scope (Hawke Panorama 4-12 x 50, AO, IR, EV) and in the end, against my better judgement I took it off my gun and loaned him it for a weekend. When he gave it me back, he mentioned that during his hunting trip he dropped his gun in muddy water, and the scope as well, but everything seemed fine. I looked through the scope and it was not fine at all....

There was now a number of small speckles / marks on the objective lens, where he stated he wiped the mud off with his finger.. :icon_eek: ...for f**k sake.......what a muppet. You can even see it in the tunnelling effect you get when the your eye is incorrectly positioned (a fine set of speckles all over the field of view). I tried cleaning it all night - nothing worked....its screwed. I told him he should really buy me a new scope....or at least some money towards a replacement...but he is a prick and is refusing. Needless to say my Christmas card list is one less for this year...

The scope re-zeroed and its 'fine' but its not the scope it was.....moral of the story....don't lend your stuff to pratts.....

Anyway, had to get a replacement as stuff like that will wind me up, so I'm now £150 down for no reason. I've offered the scope to my brother who just plinks in the garden, but if he does not want it, or does not come get it over the coming weeks, I'm happy for it to go to a good home....

In other news, the shop I got the replacement from has a few units in, but when they are gone, Hawke have put the prices up on all new models and the same scope will retail at around £175..... if you're thinking of getting one, get it now.

He should of replaced it everyone knows if you bend it you buy it.

if i had done something like that the first thing i would have said to my mate was that i would replace it . Its not a astronomical amount either . Sad that £150 quid was the price of your friendship to him . Pathetic really

Bloody shame Doc B,

been fancying one of these scopes for a while after using one at a range ( got a 4-16 sport hd but not the same as the pan)

and as you say most places prices are going up as new model stock comes in.

good luck with cleaning it

regards John

Thanks to all for your kind and supportive comments. You are all correct of course, DONT lend. I never really have and I dont really know why i did this time, a little voice in my head said, "dont lend it" but I ignored it. I never really have loaned things in the past so dont know what came over me. If I borrowed something of yours and broke it, I'd replace it like-for-like. To me its a kind of 'unwritten' thing that chaps do. I am really understanding that things can go wrong, but its how you react to things when they do that matters.

However this arse has alienated himself a little. I'm reasonably well known in the area I shoot and enough people now know what he did and all have taken a dim view. I dont think anyone will be helping him out in the near future.

It puts my other projects on hold of course. The Tx needs a service and new scope - cant afford that for a couple of months now. I was going to put one of the cheaper Nikons on the Tx, but thats been kicked into the long grass. I cant afford my pop-up hide, and I was going to buy a couple of extra hunting knives (recently got a really nice EKA, and now want some of those Helle ones to go with it). What little money I'd squirreled away for my next purchases has gone on a scope I should not have had to buy......aw well.... :cray:
