Foxhounds

Recommended Posts

Thank you Whippet99, your views are the same as mine and to the other posters that can see problems, massive problems, if your looking to breed lurchers out of foxhounds.

The bad points far outweigh the good in my opinion.

And for those who think because of the name and their quarry all foxhounds must be out and out fox takers, when in reality they are pack dogs and many of em dont have the minerals to pull foxes!

That pack mentality may cause problems too for the lone hunter, especially if he only keeps the one dog, without the strength of the pack foxhounds can be neurotic and lets be honest put that alongside a neurotic track greyhound and that could be a nightmare!

And so the two most obvious problems, hunting up and singing like a bird. Well, you must all have vast mega safe permo cause they are the last things any self respecting lurcherman should ever want..!!

Oh yer, that book by Simpson. Its one of my faves but i've looked and looked at those pictures and though i have no idea what that dog is, i very much doubt its a f1 foxhound/greyhound!

Nah, feck that!!

This is it walker/trig fine example of a racy hound owned by gilliers

heres my theory on it , if your adding any amount of foxhound too running dog ie lurcher , then exspect it too hunt like a hound , yeah it would add size and confirmation , it may open up when hunting

Youre not wrong Ray ,around Christmas we were ferreting over Cheshire and the farmer warned us the hunt was coming through later in the morning.....we did the part they were expected to come through f

i had 1 about 30 odd yr ago, foxhound.x greyhound would run on hunting even after the hare had juked it,had to be on slip all the time or hunted up miles in front lol, never again.

but if you were foxing on the open mountain that's the most important quality , something hanging round your feet waiting to get sighted would be useless.

I'm sure they have a place but would agree they wouldn't suit most people.

spot on back end of the season i went for a walk with a man bigging his lurcher up being a good hunter and casting ability she barely got 300 metres from us on the collars unless sighted. My bitch was over 900metres and counting on the garmin running a line. And she put to bed after sighted. He asked me if she had any hound in i said nah she just knows her job and i think she isnt the best as my other bitch queenie in my kennel was better. He aint walked with me since lol

I honestly dont think hound is required but and big but if you want real casting ability following scent with no sighting its quarry for miles a hound is really only option.

Oh, like I say my experience with trail hounds is limited but on the whole I found them to be mute compared to foxhounds.

I'm surprised that the trail hound hasn't been crossed with greyhounds more.

Some say that the fell hound has running dog way back in it's ancestry.

Is it true that a good trail hound will fetch a lot £££££££s ?

a GOOD hound can sell for a few grand.. but it has to be good! i cant get any videos on but i have some crackers of 30 odd running in full cry!

old dog veterans will do 5 mile in 22-26 mins and thats over roads hills scree the lot

I find a lot of lads want lurchers for point and slip lamping and ferreting !! You can have a terrier to ferret aslong as it marks I wouldn't call a good ferreting dog a good day dog !! Other lads like lurchers that will hunt up and cast that's the type of dog I like can't stand a dog being around my feet drives me insane ! We all have different opinions in lurchers I would try abit of hound on my lurchers and for giving mouth on a hunt if it's when in sights it's quarry be f***ing handy that !!

its a secret lol!

its a small feed ( called a bait) we give them a small handfull of cooked pasta and a 2 sardines...others give chicken breast ect ect their then taken back from the "catch" and towled down and often sponged down with cold water and given a drink of milk or cold tea to settle the stomach put back into their traveling jackets and into the motor then onto the next class of hounds ( restricted.maidens,pups. puppy maidens ect ect)
