johnny boy68 11,726
Cracking pics and beautiful looking place John.... We went fossil hunting yesterday on Beer beach along the Jurassic coast, filled our day and cost nothing, like you say better than any theme park any day of the week for me! Funny enough Kev it came on tv the other day and both my kids said "Can we go there Dad" So that's on the to do list for the summer. It's great having kids that enjoy it though mate isn't it, it's all more pleasing seeing them enjoying it.

Beer is a cracking little traditional fishing village mate, the boats are winched straight onto the beach, you can hire a beach hut for a tenner for the day... For fossil hunting further along the coast is better, Lyme Regis... not been since school looking for fossils, had a go yesterday but didn't find much....but the crab sandwich and cream tea was nice lol.. Just had the kids out on a bike ride along the canal with the dogs, I'm off out on the Kayak for a bit of peace and quiet now lol... nice they like being outside, but they would be on a computer game if I let them for too long as well !!

It's actually two rivers, the first fall in the photos is on the Hepste which has almost black trout because of the peaty water, because the water is acid there is not much plant life or insects for the fish to feed on, a half lb fish is a specimen. The other falls are on the Mellte, I have fished the falls in the photos and had plenty of trout out of there. The water in the Mellte although rising on the same type of mountain as the Hepste is less acid because of the limestone it runs through, consequently there is more insect life for the fish to feed on and there are better fish in there. Still as spate rivers they will never rival a chalk stream for size of fish. TC
Tiercel 6,986
What I should have added is that both rivers go underground in parts in low water conditions. The photo Johnny has of the mouth of Porth yr ogaf cave just upstream from there the river comes up from underground. And on the Hepste it goes underground in a few places, it's odd to see water disappearing into stones on the river bed, even odder to see it reappearing out of gravel half a mile down stream.
