Tiercel 6,986
We had a nice afternoon today, little wind and sun. The thyme is in full bloom at the moment and I noticed there were a few bees on it. In all I thought there were four different species of bumble bees on the flowers,. I took some photos, and while not great there is enough detail to make out the different markings on the bees. So, Mr Darcy can you enlighten me please. The one in the first two photos is nesting under my shed. Back view of the same bee. Number two. Three. Four. Are they different types of the Bumble bee or just workers or males of the same species? J Darcy 5,871
I'm not good with bees, but I'd say they were two species. But then again to offer a true answer i'd have to google it and that would be cheating.....sorry I can't give a better answer, I don't know much about bees.......

Mister Gain 1,764
Unable to help with identification, but often wondered at different variety of bees that visit my 'townie' garden. Whilst taking the dog for his morning walk to the park the other saturday, I came across a small swarm of bees on the footpath. Kept the dog clear of them, and let him have his run, thinking some good citizen would deal with the bees by getting in touch with any local beekeepers..When taking him for his afternoon walk, the swarm was still there. Whilst I was putting his bag of poo into the nearby shit bin he decided to investigate why the 'ground' appeared to be moving. I called him, but puppy curiosity was too strong and had turned him command deaf. Think he got stung on his left paw, as he started flicking his paw rather rapidly, so another of doggy life's lessons learnt.I managed to contact a couple of beekeepers who, as it turned out, live about 100 yards away (google), who rescue bee swarms and produce local honey, so ended up dressed up like a spaceman and watched the rescue procedure. Quite interesting. Had my phone with me so took a photo, dodgy old phone only 5mp camera, hence crappy photo. The beekeeper phoned me on the sunday and informed me that the swarm contained a small queen, and they had settled into their small hive/box, very well. His hives are kept at the local collage campus and he said he would let me know when the honey is harvested. I would have thought my pup may have learnt a lesson with being stung, but no, he investigated a bee the other day and got stung just below his bottom lip, f*cking idiot must have a peanut for a brain.
J Darcy 5,871
I was at a swarm the other day taking a few photos. A beekeeper came across and said 'They don't like electrical equipment' The minute he'd said that the bee's started attacking him! They ignored me sat there with my camera. It was amusing watching him run across the field swatting his head...
