shropshire mole 190
Ask the rather elusive Matt for an update? Quote Link to post
Mr Wasp 187
Havent heard a thing. In fact i sent Matt a text the other day asking if he had heard any news. No response. So he is either very busy or dead. Mind, considering the ficcle nature of folk, i suspect flat pack have read a few of the negative threads on here and thought feck it, why bother. 1 Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
Sod flatpack!!....I have been speaking to a company that are sending me a couple of 100% stainless steel traps to try out. The price will be cheaper than flatpacks and the delivery will be better too, none of this waiting 6 weeks rubbish! In all the times I have emailed flatpack I have never had a reply! The future, IMO, is going fully SS so that traps will, literally , last a lifetime. The FP 'ultimate' traps still have galv loops, which will deteriorate over time. Obviously, it all comes down to production costs.....but if this thing goes ahead it will be always cheaper than FP. Edited June 4, 2015 by J Darcy 1 Quote Link to post
Mr Wasp 187
Actually what we had in mind were going to be all stainless as well. I am not bothered either way, I use talpex pretty much exclusively anyway. A trap will only last as long as the spring, once the power has gone, the trap is useless/in-humane IMO Quote Link to post

moxy 617
A trap will only last as long as the spring, once the power has gone, the trap is useless/in-humane IMO And that would be my opinion too. I like the concept but as I've said many times as have others. I can't see how you benefit from the added expense. All this talk of stainless!! Stainless will rot (certainly not as fast as steel) but all will Depend on the grade of stainless used to manufacture the traps. There's no way I can see they are going to use a high grade. Not saying it can't be done and they won't but the price difference will be...!!? Well..! Noticeable But let's not confuse the trap body from the wire work. As echoed in the above comment. Once the spring has gone! Best of luck pulling a tight trap out of a deep dried in or frozen run and resisting the temptation to yank it out by the wires. Sprung or unsprung. Quote Link to post

You raise some interesting points there, Moxy.Well worthy, of consideration,.... Edited June 4, 2015 by earth-thrower Quote Link to post

What I was getting at Moxy is a trap that is fully stainless and yet cheaper than FP. I can't see any negative points for not having them. The FP ones I have here from before this season are all heavily corroded. Quote Link to post
moxy 617
That's poor JD. It just seems to me that stainless traps = cash cow. Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
That's poor JD. It just seems to me that stainless traps = cash cow. So if you could get a stainless trap cheaper than a standard trap you'd go with the standard? Come on Moxy, surely SS is better? If it's cheaper and 5% smaller than FP traps and will certainly last longer than them, I can't see an argument?? 1 Quote Link to post
shropshire mole 190
JD can you say who the other company is that are sending you traps? Quote Link to post

The way I currently see things is that stainless traps are an overpriced gymic. The wires will weaken and ultimately lead to scrap traps. They could be made from titanium. It won't make one iota of difference. However. Poor quality is no excuse and Cost is always a factor...... I'm listening Quote Link to post
TOMO 26,633
Surly once the stainless bit it scratched,,,it will rust like any other? Quote Link to post
3175darren 1,101
I use my stainless from flat pack quite heavily, in what I consider to be acidic soil, and to be fair they still look spot on, and they are 3 coming up 4 yr old, they have been worth the money, 1 Quote Link to post
