Man Suffocates Whilst Ferreting??

Recommended Posts

Today's sun has a story of a man named Stephen whinfrey that has apparently suffocated while digging to a rabbit,he was ferreting alone and his stuff was at his side and he was found the next morning, just wondered how true or accurate the story is and if anyone knows anymore?? If its as portrayed then its a tragedy and I feel for all involved...

There was a similar incident a couple of years back in Ireland I think? Im assuming he dug down and reached in head first and it collapsed. Rare that I ever get a deep dig on my land but Ill be being a bit careful after this, poor bloke.

I have to admit,, I was once head down about 4ft into a tube, (granted my ankles were being held)

I was more worried about it collapsing than I was about the fox trying to hammer the terrier I was reaching past ! hahahahahaha

We have a lot of deepish digs on some of our permissions 3ft being about average ,but 4 and 5 fters nothing unusual, had a few arse twitchers this season....worst was 7ft in under a canal towpath in sand....never again, leave that bank alone now. There was a similar one here about 20 yrs ago, fella took his terrier out for a mooch and didn't come home...found him next day, suffocated ,legs sticking out of a hole, left a young wife (who I went to school with, lovely girl) and a few kids....Be careful fellas... RIP Fergie

Old sandy soil is deadly for falling in on you. And the burrows tend to be deeper in them too. 5 and 6 ft digs are common enough. Was actully thinking that on my last dig trying to retrieve a collar at 6ft after the umpteenth attempt at clearing it. Feet first always. Im always on my own apart from the dog

We try to take every precaution on a deep dig when we break threw it always my son that goes into get the ferret and rabbit out as we reckon I could pull him out faster than he could get me out if something happened and after he lies down and crawls in I already have agrip on his knees . As said what a terrible waste of life for a rabbit

Yes it is true. I used to live in the same village and know the family. Not sure why it was only in the sun last week because it happened back end of last year. Only reason he was found was his dog was found barking and crying at his side the next morning.
