suffolkpoacher 219
Just something fast, tough and smart, whats in it is less important. But I think the ground we run would break a lot of peoples (and dogs) hearts. Big difference in catching stuff in a field or running into the open, and something you almost never see, that runs through the real thick forest. . . . . . Are yours good in open as much as in cover mate? Quote Link to post

The only thing of any substance is whats in the mix,you can run any dross bred mutt and it will usually come up short,on any ground, fast, tough and smart are 3rd rate to bred for the job in hand, who would give a bricklayer a carpenters job?.The only thing that runs through thick forest at pace is thickwads and wind. 1 Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,216
SP - They have a higher catch rate in the open, than in the woods. So I guess so. I wasn't looking for an argument though. M - Not even sure I understand your point. . . . . who said anything about being 'dross bred'. I just don't think you can say if you get a dog with x% this and y% that, it will defiantly be the best choice for a particular quarry . . . . . if a dog is a good dog, and from a line of good dogs, and it does the job, what exactly is in it, is not the most important thing in the world. And yes, running flat out in the woods is a bad idea. . . . hence the tough and smart part. 1 Quote Link to post

My dogs neither tough nor smart but does fine in thick woodland I took him through very thick woodland almost everyday the first year of his life and he negotiates it fine now,if his little lizard brain is capable of learning to negotiate it i'm sure any normal dog can. 1 Quote Link to post
