M - Not even sure I understand your point. . . . . who said anything about being 'dross bred'. I just don't think you can say if you get a dog with x% this and y% that, it will defiantly be the best choice for a particular quarry . . . . . if a dog is a good dog, and from a line of good dogs, and it does the job, what exactly is in it, is not the most important thing in the world. And yes, running flat out in the woods is a bad idea. . . . hence the tough and smart part. My dogs neither tough nor smart but does fine in thick woodland I took him through very thick woodland almost everyday the first year of his life and he negotiates it fine now,if his little lizard brain is capable of learning to negotiate it i'm sure any normal dog can.
