got some lovely land that has never had any one on it in over 10 years with a gun,went and checked it out this morning i didnt take my gun just binos for a good look around,there running everywhere cant waite to get started on them,im off to telford tonight but i will have a free day wednesday so i will have a go at them then and let you know the results

Lucky you,sounds like its going to be a good day and its always fun when you first workout the best way to shoot new land.

 

My regular permission is well shot and there's only clever critters left on there but I guess it adds to the challenge!

thanks mate,i just like to get a feel for the land,its a old mansion thats getting re built my mates mate bought it and he put me forward for it the woods are massive and plenty of fields,in going to get some feeders put up and leave them for a few days before i start shooting it

Yes I know im going to struggle with leaves this year,but once I get it all sorted I will be ready for next year,the thing I couldnt belive is how the stood long enough to look at you before running up the trees,no doubt that will change once I start. Shooting them

Great job mate. Feeders is the way to go if you want to make serious inroads into squizzers. I shoot them all the time up north and even though some of my woodland is well shot and they are very nervous, at the end of the day they are a creature of habit and need to feed. I'd just alter the time I shoot them and make sure I'm onsite and hidden before they arrive.

 

I have found that the greys, in different regions have very different habits regarding feeding time. Once you've worked that out with the feeders, you're good to go.

There should be a few dreys about as well, always worth a stalk, or even a prod. Greys can have up to around 3 dreys as they expect some of their nests to get raided or taken over by maggies / rivals etc, so they are clever enough to have a contingency plan....

you can get them with an air rifle, but you'd need to change your approach to them if they've wised up to the one you're using.

rimfireboy yes mate air rifle,dr b yes i like using the feeders and a decent hide ,i will make a start on a good hide once i know the path there using and the feeder they hit most

I haven't got any feeders set up down there but I can shoot them from my truck as they forage about on the ground, not normally within airgun range though. I've hit them hard with a shotgun over the last couple of years though drey poking.I checked out a large wood that I've got shooting permission on last year, intending to return with an air rifle but I've had too many other jobs to do that I haven't got around to it yet, I'm thinking now that I must get back up there and have another look.

What will come of the perm once the house is rebuilt,do you know yet if you can keep the shooting permission there or is this a short term thing? Be a shame to lose a good perm but I suppose you make the most of it then move on if need be?

Random the new owners are living on site on a caravan to make sure the build goes the way they want it to go,its a listed building so it has to go back to the way it was as far as I know mate,its my mates brother inlaw who owns the house and land and he has told me as long as im responsible and have insurance the land is here for me when the house is finished, they have securitynon site with dogs as theres a lot of valuble wood and building materials around so I can only shoot. During day time till 4, as the dogs roam the woods
