jonnie bravo 572
Got to agree with Simon here, 3-9x40 has never left me wanting. Can't stand 50mm lenses though, I hate high mounts too. Ofcourse real men shoot with 4x32's on low mounts 1 Quote Link to post
pianoman 3,587
D'you know Jonnie, I once had a Nikko Stirling Gold Crown 4x32 fixed mag scope scope I picked up for a tenner at a gunshop and it was genuine little beauty! I could hit anything at some decent ranges with it on my HW77 .22.. Alas, I put it on my FAC HW80 and the high level of recoil this rifle produces, did for it! Reticle damaged beyond repair. ATB Simon Nice! What range were you comfortable shooting at with it? Shame about the broken ret, I've heard a lot of good things about the old gold crown's Quote Link to post
Dan Dare 19
Sportsman Gun Centre is selling several Gold Crown Airking models at discount at the moment. Are they the ones you mean, Simon (for example - http://www.sportsmanguncentre.co.uk/product/96550ad7ac75b76689944055/Nikko+Stirling+Gold+Crown+Airking+4x32+Illuminated+AO+Mildot/)? They look tempting at those prices. Quote Link to post
pianoman 3,587
Wasn't that one in the link Dan. But it was a simple, small scope that I don't think the company makes or markets anymore. Glossy tube with a gold ring around the bell of the objective lens. Coin-turn turrets. It was as simple as a scope gets but, I was always pleasently surprised how well it held zero. It made a superb optic for hunting squirrels and mink. Nikko Stirling have made some pretty decent scopes for not a lot of money over the years. And generally, they stand up to sub-12 ft/lbs spring rifles very well. Jonnie I could tightly group any number of shots out to 30 yards with it; my normal zeroing range for open field shooting with a .22 rifle. It really was a little gem that 4x32. My eyesight is not so good as once it was these days, so I need an adjustable objective, front focusing scope now. All the best gentlemen. Simon 1 Quote Link to post
jonnie bravo 572
That's what I have heard, that the old glossy ones are the business, top glass apparently. Think my next springer will get a 4x32 on low mounts. 1 Quote Link to post
VWman 232
I have been shooting in the barns after work and the light is low but when I use my mates hw97 with it's very old Tasco scope with it's 50mm lens things seem much sweeter than my 40 hawkehd. Quote Link to post
jonnie bravo 572
What mag are you using on your Hawke in low light pal? Quote Link to post
VWman 232
What mag are you using on your Hawke in low light pal?Hello Johnie Think I about 4 or 5 and it's a 3-9x40 I did have it up a bit for zero and left it there like a plonker and missed a dead shot first time out because when I put the scope to my eye I lost the bird LOL. jonnie bravo 572
Haha I know that feeling! On 5x mag with a 40mm lens you should get an 8mm exit pupil, which is the maximum amount of light your eye can take in. Sounds like the Hawke just isn't cutting it with light transmission. I've had a look through a couple of old tasco scopes, the world class model, and the lenses were superb- I think they are a similar story to the nikko gold crown, they just don't make them like they used to. Hello Jonnie If I had not had the use of that well set up hw97 old model with it's old Tasco good quality rim fire scope iwould not have noticed the difference. I am looking hard at the New Nikon staff 7, there is a 40 and a 50 with good light transmission. I think they are as much as I think I can push the money. They are a lot of money for me but miles away from the top end of scopes but I am using a HW95 or could put it on the HW77 so for a springer the Nikon should be well up to the job. Quote Link to post
jonnie bravo 572
See if you can have a look through one first pal but I can't imagine you getting a bum deal from a nikon. Some good choices of scope in this thread, its all about finding what suits you best. Although I'm loving the genesis at the mo I will probably have a different scope on the mounts in a couple of months! Tart. Quote Link to post

Hello Jonnie I have been in the barns again tonight and was swaping between the 95 with no scope and the 77 with the Hawke HD 3-9x40 and would just like to say it is not as bad as I am making out and is very usable really. I would not want to put anyone off buying one. 1 Quote Link to post
jonnie bravo 572
Totally agree with you a great budget scope £40 new is brilliant for the money. But a little more and you can improve the quality. Quote Link to post
VWman 232
I have got some boxes winging there way from Uttings and Ramsbottoms. I hope the scope is well boxed and marked up as handle with care ?. Do they travel well ? Quote Link to post
