I have a 11 week old pup am looking for opinions on whether or not to get her spayed and if so at what age? Have been advised by vet if I am going to get it done, to do it before 1st season? Anyone have experience on how this may affect drive and possible weight gain? I'm not going to breed from her so would prefer to not have the hassle of her coming into season but don't want to compromise at all in terms of her drive/working. Just looking for some pluses and negatives really.

personly i wouldn't if you just want her to stop cuming in season you can get tablets to stop her season

If you are going to get her spayed wait until she has had her first season. That way she will be physically and emotionally mature. Although I don't get my own bitches spayed I can understand why it might be easier for someone with just one dog not to have to deal with the hassle, especially if the bitch lives in the house. IMO spaying is a better option than continually suppressing a heat twice a year with hormones injections or tablets.

Again, spaying at under six months old is becoming increasingly more common within the UK, although there are a range of problems that can potentially be caused by spaying your bitch while she is very young. As with male dogs, female dogs need to produce the T3 and T4 growth hormones that begin production alongside of impending sexual maturity, as well as oestrogen for normal development and hormone regulation. A bitch that is spayed while too young will not have had the opportunity to have begun producing oestrogen and other essential hormones, which can lead to a range of problems in later life. Urinary incontinence can result from inadequate oestrogen production, a condition that cannot be reversed and will require ongoing oestrogen supplementation for the rest of their lives; something that is of course, not ideal for many reasons.

Once your bitch has completed her first season, you should seek to have her spayed shortly afterwards .This ensures that she has reached sexual maturity before spaying, and ensures that you can calculate where she is in her oestrogen cycle to ensure that she is spayed between cycles. Spaying a bitch in heat or who is on the verge of a season is much more risky for the bitch, and veterinarians will not spay a bitch in heat unless it is an emergency.

Received wisdom used to dictate that a bitch should be allowed to have a litter before being spayed, however there is no good basis in fact for this, and your bitch will not benefit from having a litter before spaying.

Definetly wait until shes had a season,for those with older unspayed bitches a word of caution....last weekend had to rush my 8yr old bitch to emergency vet with Pyo....resulting in an expensive full hysterectomy,and 3 days in the vets,shes come through it fine,finishes her antibiotics tomorrow and back for a check up next week,it came on without warning and we nearly lost her ATB Dave

Definitely wait for her first season, for the reasons mentioned above, but I would also suggest you wait until the bitch is at leastayear old or even more for a large dog, to make sure the growth plates are properly closed. I have had bitches come into heat at six months, long before they were finished growing.

 

Secondly, despite what some folks might tell you , spaying won't affect drive at all. Some bitches will put on weight more easily, but this is easily managed by diet and exercise which we should all be doing with working dogs any way.

 

Don't go down the drug route if it can be avoided, there are potential side effects which can be very nasty
