earth-thrower 493
Don't want to appear too health and safety, but if I was using a spade with a spike on top of the shaft I'd be worried about impaling myself on it. Or merely gouging an eye out. lol,...you know ,thats a fair point. The blacksmith never picked up from the drawing, i wanted a 'bulbous' tip, he made it flat shaped, initially, like a 'spear tip' ! ha ha so i had to get him to correct it.I will probably carry it by the 'head socket', maybe. I will have to watch, going over the gates & fences, with it,....lol My 'old dad' when i showed him it, said " youll have to unscrew that "spiked part" off it, incase you "stab" yourself, with it ? lol Quote Link to post

They had the 'spade head' at one end, and a proper 'spike' at the other end ? The 'spike' was used to make a hole in the soil, to insert a 'spring stick', that powered the old traps,....i believe they would cut lengths of willow or hazel, for it,....Thought it would also be useful, to have the two parts combined into the one tool, for convenience ?
