NEWKID 27,143
After my mate sending me a pic of a decent bass out of the estuary on his yak, I was straight in the shop for a dozen peelers and after 1 for myself.I'd planned a 5am start but was knackered, so eventually dragged my sorry ass out of bed at 6am and got on the water for around 7..It was lovely down there, flat calm and warm, there were a few mullet breaking surface and the tide was just starting to run...I tried 3 seperate marks moving off of the main channel towrds the sand banks, tying to one of the hundreds of mooring bouys each time, but no luck.. then a small boat tied up around 200 yrds from me and instantly one of the lads caught a small bass... being the top, stealthy poacher I am I shot 50 yards upstream from them, passing with a cheery "morning" lol.. and fished with a bit more confidence... I only had a few hours as I had to get up the hospital so the next hour I had to catch,, within 10 mins I had a decent rattle, then another.. i gave alittle line and waited, another rattle ensued.. a gentle wind and the the fish took, I was fishing real light gear, I knew it wasn't a bass and would be a flounder, sure enough up he came an average fish of around a pound ( or dinner plate size lol) he was deep hooked so a keeper,.. The bites kept coming, I ended with 4 flounder and a small school bass, I only kept the 1 fish... he was real tasty with a a bit of salad and a knob of butter on top..So last night I decided to have a crack at a bass off of the far point of Sandy Bay, this is a fair paddle from Exmouth out to a cliff point called straight point where the marines have a rifle range..It was a bit choppy tbh and the paddling was tough, but after 30 mins or so I'd reached the last bouy of the channel estuary which marks the deep water out of the mouth, as the tide was dropping I hoped the bass had pushed out to this point... there were a lot of terns and gannets working so the bait fish were there. I set up a spinning rod with a sandeel imitation (fiish Black minnow) on and started slinging it about, I also set up a string of feathers and left them in the rod holder, to troll when moving to reposition the drift.Well the mackerel were in as it was the featers that caught, in 30 mins or so I'd put 30 mackerel in the box and a scad, I could of caught another 30 easily but I'm not into catching for the sake of it, I put the feathers away and came back into the estuary, following the gannets to see if I could snatch a bass as it was getting dark.. no luck today on the bass but a nice fill of mackies and a late supper with crusty bread of fresh mackerel was nice..Oh and a few on the barbie tonigh, the neighbours had a few, as did my auntie, mum and dad etc...like the fish man today lol.a bit swelly 1/2 mile or so off!worth it though!!nom nom lol 6 Quote Link to post
