stealthy1 3,964
This is the first year I've had Robins nest in my garden, and they're nesting in a tit box with a hole, I made the box and the hole is the standard size hole per the RSPB nestbox plan I've made open fronted boxes for Robins, Wrens, Blackbirds and thrushes for years, but only had Blackbirds. Has anyone else had Robins nest in a holed nestbox?

Good, glad its not a local thing, I might start and make my nestbox holes bigger in future. I've Blue Tits in another box, but they've been a bit quiet this week, hoping it's because the chicks are about to hatch Cheers for the info

Never came across that before and I've heaps of boxes up, a lot safer for the brood in the hole fronted box, magpies play havoc with them nesting round the hedges here, 2 broods of tree sparrows , great tit , blue tit and starlings in boxes around the house, never had coal tit nest in any ever ??

I'd be made up with the Tree Sparrows It's funny you should say Magpie, because there's a Carrion Crows nest looking down from a fir tree. It's the first time I've seen Robins in a holed box. The funny thing about the tree sparrows is , a cock bird would always show up every spring at one of the boxes calling for a hen but none ever came , this is the first year one arrived, and another pair showed up and put a pair of great tits out of theirs who went on to nest in a different box around the front, The two tree sparrow boxes are only about 6 meters apart , I thought they were more territorial than that, unlike the house sparrow , you live and learn, nice to see them though
fireman 10,993
If you put a big ball of chicken wire around nest boxes etc a lot of vermin can't get to them and dead easy thing to do and still be able to get into the boxes to clean them out
