Have two mates with Navarra's both have had no end of trouble, one with transmission and the other the engine. I would consider a Toyota, or my personal favourite the Land Rover, should get a really nice TD for that sort of money.

i would go for a landrover defender 90 or 110 thats what they always have on the local farm and they go every where its all moantain and hill where i live and they never have problems in any weather they are alot of fun in the snow aswell my old man had a navara stuck in the snow on a hill we then got the land rover to pull him out

a seated 110 defender the best allrounder and looks the business lots of extras to add on along the way. cheap to run and cheap for parts.

Navara 02-03-04 no way, £6000 to fix it when it goes pop anywhere from 40k onwards, feck that, since i got shot of mine it has been like having a great weight removed from my shoulders, no more wondering if today is the day i lose an awful lot of money. Personally i went back to what i know will go on and on and will still fetch a tidy sum when i am done with it.

Yes i know the heaters are crap, fuel economy is crap, and they tend to be a bit draughty but hey, if i wanted a towny comuter vehicle i would have bought a micra.

We have over a 1000 acres 400 hill ground have had defenders cant fault them except when it comes to room comfort and mpg ,We have now switched to Nissan navaras with BF Goodrich all terrains second winter yet to get stuck,Mine out today mole harrowing

apart from that how do they rate against Hilux ref off road,fuel etc

 

I know mate and I for one shit myself about all the scare stories! after reading into it and doing a bit more homework it seems they're not much different the other Motors that blow their top, I think it all comes down to how you drive them and care for them, my Nav D22 has now done 98,000 and still sweet as a nut! I'll hang onto it until there's enough spare cash for a Outlaw.

 

When you look at the figures the Navara comes back with a slightly better MPG, it also has a bit more grunt and the newer Outlaw looks the business compared to the others, it has a real pitbullish look about it.....

i have just bought a navara i was shitting it reading all the bad stories about them ,i pm jasper and a couple others asking about navaras and they were helpful but it was my misses for once in her life that came out with sense ,her example was a guy we know swears by subuaru but how come iff they are that great he owns a garage fixing only subuaru ,like she said if you look for the negatives you,ll find them in all models

got an L200 dose the job fine and comfortable to drive BUT if you want some thing that is good on fuel do not go for one of these

i'm sure mine puts another hole in the ozone every time i start it

I've got a 4.0 Rangie, only a few years old; but on the shoot we have just bought a 1998 (R reg) Disco 300tdi, 7 seets. All the comfort you need without all the elec-trickery that goes wrong in newer LR's.

 

The 300tdi is a great engine, have seen them do over 400,000 miles as long as they are serviced reg at about 6-7,000k.

Ours is a manual and returns about 35mpg on a run and came direct from a Jap importer that specialises in Discos, from overthere they come with higher standard spec than UK cars, tend to be much better cared for as rarely used off road and are 100% rust free and was Stay-Kleened before we baught it (much much better than Waxoil), and has only done 65,000 miles; the cost = £9k, same car from UK would be 1/3 cheaper but not even close to being the same condition.

go for the toyota landcruiser mate,you could buy one now and if you want to sell it in years to come you would still get near what you paid?but hilux a really good alternative

im a big defender fan mate ,love them to bits but if i needed one all round 4x4 i would buy a isuzu rodeo they are first rate on fuel reliable and have enough grunt

A cheap alternative is the hi- lux surf. These were big business four or five years ago- a mate of mine was spannering for an importer who made mega bucks buying them fresh of the boat from japan and selling them locally. They were being bought by townies who wanted 4x4' s to look gangsta. Now they are not fashionable, they are difficult to sell and you can buy them cheaply. If you don' t mind the auto transmission and the silly writing on the side, they are cheaper than a hi lux pick up and those that recently came off the boat are normally very low mileage, well maintained and well specced. Just make sure you get the one with the larger engine- the smaller one is unreliable. Not very 'county set', but a good 4x4 on and off road.
