Kennel Cough

Recommended Posts

My dogs recently got this after a stint in the pound and my bitch got over it in less than a week. I feed them the BARF (bones and raw food) diet which I have read helps dogs recover from kennel cough and numerous other illnesses and ailments. My dog which I sent to a friends house has taken much longer to get over it (over two weeks now) and he is not being fed BARF, maybe the BARF diet is as good as they claim. I am curious if anybody knows if there are any long term effects for a running dog from kennel cough.

Rest is key for the cough, light exercise;benolin will ease it ,not cure it, not sure about the jab,it's a virus ,if a dog coughs on you , you will carry it on, when our hounds got it it would just run it's course , bout 3wk.

A course of antibiotics will shift it I've always used the jab never had a prob imo it works . Like desert dog said don't go to anyone's place with the same cloths on coz you will pass it on .

A course of antibiotics will not shift a virus: like there is nothing that cures the common cold: it's a virus. It has to run its course. The only time when antibiotics are effective is if a bacterial infection has been brought on by the virus, as in pneumonia, which sometimes happens in dogs which get kennel cough if they are old, under par, already ill or in bad condition: hence the idea that the BARF diet helps, which it does as the dog's body is getting optimum nutrition rather than having to cope with food that isn't ideal for dogs, as in a mostly cereal-based diet, even though some seem to cope OK on that type of food.

Milk, honey and cough syrup warm it up together and give 4 times a day. This will EASE the symptoms not cure it... Kennel cough is best left to run its course.

The above was advice given to me ten years ago by a very good vet, its always done my dogs well ;)

Viruses do not respond to antibiotics, secondary bacterial infections will but not a virus good food clean water and time, you can give a linctus to ease the throat but how beneficial I dont know. As said it is highly contagious so isolate the dog and wear overalls when around the infected dog and wash hands boots in a disinfection bath to stop secondary infections from being introduced.

when the dogs go in boarding kennels they can get it very easy there, from what iver heard of other people , when they get there dog or dogs jabbed up booster)which you (got) to have in any b/k's a lot of people give the dogs the spray thing, it squirted up in to the dog nose , and it will or supposed to stop any infection k.c etc. if I was going to put mine in b/k's I do the same, I not sure it works if the dog already got kennel cough though :hmm:

You can't tell if it's viral or bacterial with out testing that's why vets give antibiotics . The best way is just get the dogs jabbed still isn't 100 percent but prevention better than cure . You can't give them the jab when they've got it .
