shepp 2,285
I was just wondering if anybody has ever owned or come across a a deerhound whippet first cross. On paper it sounds like a good cross, both being probably the smartest sitehounds with good noses. The whippet giving agility and bringing the size down and the deerhound giving bone and a good coat, both having plenty of guts. Should be a useful dog from the right parents. Quote Link to post

shepp 2,285
it would have to be a big whipet Well bedlingtons are put over greyhound bitches I guess the biggest problem is finding someone who is prepared to let there deerhound give birth to such a litter, when deerhounds sell for 600 quid plus. kreet 0
thats what i thought for someone to do it it would have to be to an old bitch no one had any use for or it wouldnt be worth while not alot of people would swap making £750 pup for a few hundred pound lurchers. unsure what the point would be as the greyhound would add more speed than the whippet and be a much easyer task to cross if you want to keep it small why cross with such a big dog , if you want to go big why use a whippet ? i wouldnt put the biggest dog i could use to the smallest its the oposit from why they are bred in my opinion . shepp 2,285
I see what your saying kreet but I thought they should level out to a reasonable size and the deerhound would add better coat, feet and brains than a greyhound would. Quote Link to post
jonathan 0
not being funny but a beddy x greyhound would just be the same but might not be as fast Quote Link to post
harddigging 42
i say this with a big sigh before i type but why is there any truthull reason, your thinking of text book percentiges turn on a sixpence run from drop with stanima and pace of a deerhound if that turned out id have two but the chance of hit and miss is to far im not saying dont try it but dont leave all your eggs in one basket if you got kennel space fillit up with a backup plan for next season cause in my eyes your trying to breed a ruth hared greyhound with experctations beyhond what it can fullfill dont meen to upset and im sorry if i do and dont pull me up on my spelling either dident like school but put a bit of thought into a breed before hand and it will pay off, make sure its what you want and most importantly make sure the parents are doing the do. kreet 0
i agree it would give a better coat and stronger feet but there is no real sertance of how the pups would turn out they could end up all totaly diffrent in every way or they could all be exactly the same and do well but its hit and miss id say and id probably just stick with something thats already established . if it was done and worked and i didnt have enough already id probably toy with a bitch but ill stick with the we ones Quote Link to post

ad22 1
My youngest puppy's dam was supposedly a deerhound/whippet, she certainly looked like what i would have thought a whippet deerhound cross would look like. Sire was a collie/greyhound. Here is a pic of the pup. Edited November 15, 2007 by ad22 Quote Link to post
shepp 2,285
Nice intelligent look that pup mate Quote Link to post
stevemac 434
Nature does not work that way and you wont get 50% Height, speed, coat or endurance and the pups will through more to one parent or the other. even when breed deerhound x greyhound the pups will throw like that. stevemac Quote Link to post
