Dewclaw69 484
had this problem myself with my 18 month old collie x last season. its difficult. i sort of cured it by not reacting to him and turning the lamp off and walking away. he twigged pretty quick and returned smartish. an injury and a few months laid up at the back end of the season will probably see this re occur in my dog. i put it down to the dog creating his own entertainment rather than seeing me as the source of the fun. i'm also sure that more trips out would see the dog retreiving better but i am limited in the times i can get out through early starts at work. its difficult as you dont want to lose a caught rabbit by walking away and the dog dropping it but i found that risk paid off. 1 Quote Link to post
grompz 706
seen this problem before as katchum says it usually starts when you use 2 dogs together, day or night, seen it when the lurcher makes a catch and a terrier wades in, dog takes off with rabbit, kills ,crunches it and some will even resort to eaten them, sadly a lot of soft mouthed good retrievers are ruined this way, once started almost impossiible to get them retrieving to hand again, 1 Quote Link to post
brainy 223
Thanks for all the replies , I do work both my lurchers together in the day , my other lurcher doesn't bother the bitch in question when she has caught a rabbit , but this could be a factor , I think she needs some one to one retrieve training through the summer, hopefully this will work Quote Link to post
digginmad2011 57
Mine done this a few times when there is another dog out lamping he gave it up after a few times of showing him nobody wanted to take his prize away Quote Link to post
Blackdog92 2,047
Ive never had this problem with mine but a lad i did a bit of lamping with his dog was a tw@t for stealing my dogs catch. It would drop its own catch to take mine and just mince them an piss of to the other end of the feild. After about the second trip i had enough of this as it was starting to disharten my dog and so i havnt been out with him again and as far as i know his dog is still a usless thing that crunches rabbits and wont bring them back. He still thinks its a good dog though. 1 Quote Link to post
