Errrr CLAIMS to be the oldest! Nottingham isn't about to give that title away just yet. LOL

used to be a boozer off leicester square somewhere that used to be known as the bucket of blood, apparently as an acknowledgement to its past as a venue for bare knuckle fights. probably been renamed long ago

New local is called the Three Horseshoes. Lamb and Flag is in Covent Garden if that's the one you're on about. Or is that the Lamb and Staff?

Lamb & Flag is Covent Garden.......Bear & Staff is Leicester Square ;) .....well its actually on the junction with Charing Cross Rd but think its still classed as Leicester Square.
No its neither of them........I definitely wasn't in Lond9n at the time. It'll come to me......senility is a terrible thing !

Theres also another Lamb & Flag just off Oxford Street in Mayfair i forget the road its in now.

Rose street?

Funny really how there changing the names off pubs because there called something what antis are against ...eg cockfighting ,, hunting with dogs , hunting in general.....however if they were smart they would do what 99% of Britain are doing and play the race card.....

Muslim culture has ,dog fighting ,cockfighting ,hunting with dogs ,falconry...

If they were smart and played the race card saying we're trying to encourage multiculturisum by having are pup signs something that are newfound Muslim brothers will. Like then I'm sure are government wouldn't bat an eyelid....hell I beg they'd open a couple old boozers back up hahaha

There was a fox and hounds in Battersea and the sign had two rough coated lurchers just about to strike and old Reynard spinning around on them. It was the best pub sign I've seen , anyway they changed the sign now all gone .

marshman look up a painting by gainsborough called greyhound coursing fox from the 1700s it on the English heritage site kids got me a copy for my birthday I have it hanging in the front room original is in kenwood house in hampstead heath well worth a look if you are passing

If that was the pub sign, fair play to the landlord that had it.

Like that boozer in Burscough i mentioned, the sign when i was a kid had a nice type bulldog, with a firm grip of a very angry bull's nose. All done old school, detailed and fitting with the meaning of the name.

Just on names, i have a cracking little book here on the meanings of pub names by a bloke called Albert Jack. It's pocket size, informative, very well written and well worth a read. It's called 'The Old Dog An Duck, The Secret Meanings Of Pub Names.'

Now, here's two for starters, that most famous London boozer, The Blind Begger and The Swan With Two Necks.

You'll be able to google both but read the book, its better!!

Your right about the swan upping, necks is a corruption of 'nicks', as the used to nick the beaks to identify the birds.

How about the Blind Begger, yep, the gangland stuff is recent but the meaning behind the name...??
