Joe1888 672
has to be a wind up eh? There are plans to open a chain of discount pubs nationwide that will be selling beer for a pound-a-pop. And the first has already launched in Atherton, Manchester. The idea, of course, has sent drink awareness campaigners into a frenzy. The first of these boozers has already opened in Manchester and, thus far, has been a huge hit. The second is about to start doing business in Stockton on Tees, and they would like a special license where they can sell beer from 8am. If these pubs are a success, the chain wants to go nationwide, selling various lagers, bitters, ales and ciders for £1.50-a-pint, or £1 for a half. Not that booze botherers are having any of it. Colin Shevells, director of Balance, said: “Drink is already too affordable, too available and too heavily promoted. We know that problems are caused by it being too cheap. The PoundPub is just part of a much bigger problem. We need to wake up to the problems cheap alcohol is causing both in the short and long term.” Surely, it beats a 40p can of lager from Asda though, surely? Surely? Blackbriar 8,569
They used to have a few of these in Nottingham a few years back. There was moves at the Council to close them, due to the amount of bother coming from "pound a pint" and "two for one" bars. They'd use these offers to get custom during the daytime, and go back to normal prices after 5 or 6pm. They were usually home to those who didn't want to be seen buying Special Brew at 10 in the morning......!

bwfc 164
I live 2 minutes away from the pound pub in Atherton, which has been open over a year now. The pub doesnt really get any more business, people just stay in there longer. As for any trouble,i have yet to see any of that in the time the pub has been open.
