Dumpling 23
Hello All,, My uncle has decided to pack in shooting and has offered me his Remington .22 LR ( Open sight) rifle I wondered if any one on here has used these before and how reliable they are as I don't do much fox shooting but I was thinking of using it just for that as I have a .17 HMR for the rabbits and the odd fox over a short distance so any info about the gun it self would be very grateful. The gun itself looks pretty tidy but has not been used for some time but it shoots very well and would save me a few bob buying a rifle just for foxes. Many thanks. Steve Quote Link to post
jacknife 2,005
It will kill a fox at close range Out of the 2 rifles the Hmr is the better of the 2 rifles for a fox Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
Keep the .22lr for rabbits, and get yourself a proper fox calibre .22 hornet, .222 etc, yes a .22lr will kill them humanely at reasonable range, but if you are encountering them at more than around 40-50 yards, use the hmr, or better still get one of the above .22 centerfire. 1 Quote Link to post
Dumpling 23
Thanks for the advice guys I think I wont bother with the .22 lr as the hmr can do the damage for me on the rabbits and foxes at close range. I think I will invest in a proper fox rifle for the job as the ground I got is very big and there is a good mixture of rabbits and foxes. Cheers. Steve. 1 Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
Good plan mate .222 the calibre the gods would choose, lazer beam accurate and well capable out to 250 yards, .223 a tiny bit more grunt but a bit chavy .22-250 very very fast, capable out to 400 yards + in the right hands, .220 swift, same as .22-250 but harder to get ammo for, and all of the above can be used on small deer CWD and Muntjac in England and Wales, and Roe in Scotland, if you never intend to shoot deer, (never say never) the .17 rem is well worth a look as a fox tool, as is .204 Ruger, my choice if you have a lot of ground, and big fields? Well it has to be the .22-250 mate, proper fox medicine 1 Quote Link to post

No harm in adding a 22lr the majority of FAC holders will have one Quote Link to post

Deker 3,478
A HMR and a .22lr will both deal with foxes but I'm struggling to understand why you are/were considering a .22lr for foxes as you already have a HMR, unless they were particularly close, but your posts give the impression they may not be! andyf 144
Have the 22 anyway, it's free & much cheaper to run than a 17, and in my opinion more 'generally' useful. Quote Link to post
