I run a beagle for rabbits and hares here, and have often thought about letting a jack russel run with her. I found this web site and realize there are other dogs that may be more appropriate, you guys got any good suggestions. A guy near me runs a portugese retriever with his beagles but I'm not sure I like the looks of those dogs.

Do you want to catch them?

Bring them for the gun?

Do care about obedience?

How is your terrain, thick woods, fields?

Personally, for catching I'd go for pure whippet, ibizan, small grey...for the gun basset or beagle, harrier, dachshund, leggy terriers...for obedience I would forget these breeds and take a catching collie lurcher. In very wooded terrain dogs that give tongue are way easier to work with.

Ibizan is disobedient but real nice and fast for catching and bringing for the gun, gives tongue as well but cause its so fast the hare might go further, make bigger circles giving you less chance for a shot.

Yes, I think something that I can let the beagle circle the rabbit once or twice and then release the "catch dog".

Bring them for the gun?

This would be a bonus not essential though

Do care about obedience?

Hah If I cared about obedience I never would have kept the beagle, I swear there's bulldog in there somewhere.

How is your terrain, thick woods, fields?

Yes, all of it theres some rough hip high fields we run in and some well treed areas. Versatility would be essential.

I'll look at the Ibizian, but remember there would be lots of run in rough snow as well. this may cause problems with feet.

Do you know anything about the Basenji? would something like that work?

What is a rabbit for you? a cottontail or a snowshoe hare? Do they go to ground when chased?

IMHO, if you want a catch dog for rabbits, to work with a beagle, I'd go for the pure whippet or whippet-grey cross, they have the speed and good small size for woody terrain, they don't open up and can be relatively obedient if you get a good strain and train them well. Kind of a replacement for a gun and generally easy dogs to keep. Slip, catch/loose prey and come back. Maybe the coat is a bit thin if they have to wait long periods in extreme cold.

Ibizan is very hound like, uses its nose and has a lot of stamina and good feet if you get a working strain...snow should be no problem...getting it back when you want it to might be a problem, they are a lot faster than beagles so they run very far. Slip, catch/run around for hours using nose and then come back. Probably if you get them really young obedience can be sort of imprinted.

Our late Queen Juliana bred basenji's. Kind of prehistoric, small tough dogs that fight and don't bark. I think they are too slow as catch dogs. They are supposed to be used to flush big game like dachshund and jagdterrier are used but I don't know anything about them really.
