Shooting Sticks?

So, I've been away for 5-days shooting up north. Again, on a couple of days the weather was bloody awful and I'm shooting near the sea so the wind was almost gale force at times. I was out shooting on a new rabbit perm, its pretty exposed (flat fields, near the sea, etc). I took the S410 Classic and became very aware of how the wind was blowing the gun (the effect was noticably more than with the carbine) when taking standing or kneeling shots. So I was thinking about shooting sticks. I've never used any shooting sticks before but knew some of you guys will have experience of them and give good advice.

 

So, do you use shooting sticks? If so, mono? Bipod?, or even tripod? Can you recommend a good make / model? Pros and cons? This perm has large open fields where fence posts or trees / branches dont exist and due to various issues about angles etc (that I wont bore you with), the fence posts near the hedges are not really usable. So one option is to sit on me arse in the wet hedgerow and use me knee. The other is a stick. Any thoughts?

They dont come much better than these mate if you dont mind spending the cash, a tripod is by far the best, I use tripod shooting sticks for foxing, stalking, and lamping rabbits, .22 rf or air rifle, my mate has this Primos trigger stick, it is superb and very very quick to deploy, one press of the trigger and its at the height you require.

So. Anyway. Sticks are cool man. Dont use um myself, bit old man for me But there better than a pod when walking around a perm. Bipods tend to encourage ALWAYS taking shot from the prone position.

 

If Im staking out a warren I just prop the rifle on my rucksack.

Yeah, I often have a bean bag with me about the size of a fist that I rest on posts, but this perm is awkward and some of the bits around the rabbits are very boggy, so I need to stay vertical and mobile. The bloody wind nearly sent me flying, it was that strong (and I dont have a build that you see on a Riveta advert if you catch my drift....)

Why dont you just get a rod stand and adapt it to your needs it will be a lot cheeper

 

Im thinking of doing this, you can pick them up for a few £,s at boot fares

I've been thinking about making some hazel sticks, just haven't happened upon many copses yet! I reckon a pair about 5ft with a sliding ring would be pretty versatile for different heights

only ever use shooting sticks, the two stick type as you can open them with one hand. cant see the point lying in cow horse shit or on wet ground.

I can get tight groups at decent range but have only played with it shooting paper,I'm confident with it now so am looking to get it out soon on some dinner and ferret food!!

Oh and it started out as a bipod but after I added the third leg I noticed an improvement in my grouping so would recommend tripod based on my experience so far...

I`ve used a cheap tripod shooting stick for a few years now , to great effect with the HW 100`s.

You have me tempted with the shooting sticks Charlie C .

Thanks to all of you for tips and advice.

 

I've ordered the stick recommended by Charlie. If I cant get on with it, I'll let you know. I'm not that 'handy' with making my own stuff and don't really have the tools - though the tips above are fab and I'm sure many people reading this will benefit. Cheers to all of you. To be honest, I've never used them, so its interesting to see how many of you do, and the results you get. Cheers chaps.
