DIDO.1 22,846
Anybody ever tried the beer from St sixtus abbey in Belgium? I'm just opening a bottle... Often referred to as one of the best. 30 phone calls to place an order, a massive journey looking for a hidden abbey with no signs, turn up at the appointed time and the monks may or may not have a wooden crate of unmarked bottles waiting for you... 12 percent

Lab 10,979
Well it won't be worth 30 phone calls and a trip to Belguim anyway.
DIDO.1 22,846
It's very dark, tastes strong but not hoppy. It's won awards for best beer in the world twice. They make 3 beers, 2 are under 10% and I prefare them, though you don't know what you are getting till you open it. It's not a session beer though, I drink it with food as you would with wine. Google st sixtus abbey. Visiting is a nice change after a day visiting ww1 battle fields and graveyards.
DIDO.1 22,846
It's better than Tennants and Belhaven lab :-)

Accip74 7,112
I've yet to try it, but yes it's suppose to be one of the best thats for sure......& with limited availability comes even more kudos I think.......:-) Anyway...what do you think? Is it as good as they say it is? I think it helps to have a good palate & decent knowledge about beer to make such a judgement.......for example I often drink a beer called Tongerlo Blonde in a local cafe bar round here.....& that was voted 'best beer in the World' in 2014......& I would of never of guessed! haha.... Enjoy......I'm a little envious....;-)
DIDO.1 22,846
Joking aside, why is the beer always shite in Scotland? They have some good breweries, one called haviestoun (think iv spelt it right) they do a hand pulled larger and an ale called bitter and twisted, never see it for sale up there though
DIDO.1 22,846
Accip74 where in the country are you? I may have a spare bottle. I prefare the blond that they do, the 12 is good but a bit to much for me. Yes the fact it's rare adds to it...
Lab 10,979
It's better than Tennants and Belhaven lab :-) Can't be better than Tennents lager.....? Only thing the monks have made that's any good is, as Mal has mentioned, the famous Tonic Wine. A gift from the monks....?
