Hunting

The Countryside Alliance fought a long and successful campaign to expose the damage the Hunting Act 2004 would do to the rural economy, traditions and local communities without any evidence to justify it on grounds of animal welfare.

Our campaign has guaranteed that although the Hunting Act came into force on 17th February 2005 it is now widely acknowledged to be bad law. It is no accident that the law has been exposed for what it is: bad for the rural economy, bad for rural communities, bad for animal welfare and a waste of police resources.

Thanks to our determined efforts working with hunts the vast majority have managed to adapt to the legislation whilst continuing to offer a legal wildlife management service and retain the support necessary to sustain the infrastructure of hunting and the jobs that go with it.

There have been only a handful of successful convictions under the Hunting Act involving hunts. Over 97% of convictions under the Act relate to casual hunting or ‘poaching’. However, it cannot be right that a large section of law-abiding citizens continue to be targeted by animal rights groups and forced live in fear of malicious prosecution. The Countryside Alliance continues to oppose the Hunting Act and promote legal hunting for all the benefits to individuals, the environment and the rural economy that it brings.

The Countryside Alliance has launched a new e-lobby as part of its campaign for repeal of the Hunting Act 2004. Take part here and share widely. Members and supporters are encouraged to take part in the e-lobby, reminding Conservative MPs that a vote on repeal was a manifesto commitment while urging MPs of other parties to support repeal of this failed Act. The e-lobby can be found here.

The e-lobby reads: "This may seem a minor issue besides others the Government faces, but for many of us it is a fundamental issue of personal freedom.

"There was never any justification for the ban in the first place and it was little more than a misplaced attack on the rural community. It has done nothing for wild mammals or their welfare and even Tony Blair has admitted it was one of his biggest mistakes.

"There are many who are willing to voice their views on hunting from a position of total ignorance, but there is also a quiet army of us who know that the ban is wrong. We have a real commitment and understanding of hunting and the countryside rather than a passing interest in spreading prejudice on the internet. In 2002 over 400,000 of us came from all over Britain to march on Westminster in opposition to the ban and there has been no drop in support since.

"Please could you confirm that you will support any move to repeal the Hunting Act."

yes encouraging young mothers to abandon their children in a house whilst she runs through the countryside .Isnt it a criminal offence to leave a child unsupervised in a house and isnt it inciting others to do the same even if it is a video. It should be reported to the advertising standards authority by the members who find this video disturbing and offensive.

much as i'm obviously hoping this stupid act is repealed i have a feeling it was stuck into the manifesto as a vote winner and the actual outcome may not be as we all hope. i'd be a very happy bloke to be proved wrong

I don't think anyone thinks it's a dead cert mate. I am definitely sitting on the fence. Not sure what the outcome will be.

But it would be a shame if we are all sitting here in a few years saying "we could of done more to try".

i'm with you on that gaz. i'll be writing to my MP

How many lurcher owners have been prosecuted under the hunting ban, as opposed to "trespass in pursuit"?

I know of a few Trench ?
Yeah at what cost to the tax payer. All those millions in new patrols, vehicles and sending the chopper up on more flights to scan for lampers and so on rather then protecting the streets for crimes against other people. While every other crime is greatening as lack of prioritising funding. Maybe this should be angle for country side alliance. Many people who feel unsafe in there homes because the police are to busy patroling empty fields and roads looking for us guys exercises the right to hunt. Hate em all antis, police , government.....
