good for you do you even hunt or just write about it? I dont loose sleep over anything, I have permissions enough for me where I can hunt within the law, but I also have principles and something that is unfair needs to be rectified in any walk of life or in this case sport . in order to take part in a activity that has gone on for thousands of years in one guise or another I now run the risk of being criminalised every time I go out even with guns or dogs and birds if a wild life officer spots me retrieving my dogs of land where I dont have permission and they have strayed or if my dogs kill a hare because the bird has decided to roost up instead of killing it..The Ban got bulldozed into place because of apathy doesnt look like much has changed in 11 years.

A 62-YEAR-OLD disabled angler was threatened by balaclava-clad animal rights protesters brandishing baseball bats and pickaxe handles.

Peter Rainbow, from Bassingbourn, was fishing in the River Granta near Harston when around 20 protesters emerged suddenly and began threatening him.

 

Mr Rainbow, who was by himself on the river bank, said: "It was nearly dusk ÂÂ* about 4pm. I heard some banging of drums and I thought at first that someone had their car radio on very loud.

 

"Then there were around 20 people there, all wearing balaclavas and carrying loudhailers. They had baseball bats and pickaxe handles as well."

 

Mr Rainbow, who suffers from emphysema and has mobility problems, rang police on his mobile phone. They were on the scene within minutes ÂÂ* but the protesters had gone when they arrived.

 

They did not physically attack Mr Rainbow and he believes they set out just to intimidate him.

 

"It was very frightening. I had the shakes for quite a bit afterwards. I wouldn't like to go through it again," he said.

 

The protesters were shouting slogans such as: "How many fish have you killed today?" and "How would you like a hook through your mouth?"

 

Mr Rainbow said: "We use barbless hooks which don't harm the fish and we return them straight to the river. It just goes to show how ill-informed they are.

 

"I had some sympathy for animal rights at first. But they just seemed like a rent-a-mob bunch. They looked like terrorists."

 

Police said animal rights protesters had been demonstrating at Huntingdon Life Sciences on Sunday afternoon. Many moved on to the Aventis premises at Hauxton later and officers believe some of them may have been the ones who approached Mr Rainbow.

 

Joseph Dawson, of Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC) said his group were opposed to all cruelty to animals but would not condone intimidation of anglers.

 

He said: "As far as we know it was not people from our campaign."

wouldnt suprise me in the least, what are the little white things used in fishing maggots ? You couldnt win your referendum so no great loss to this campaign would be my guess

As some one said its going to be sooner than later so get E=mailing your Mps writing to your local papers and lets get a London March organised we cant sleep the lacs and antis wont be.

Being truthful here folks,has the ban "really" had such an effect on your hunting ways with the dogs that it's had you at the point of reaching for a rope? Running & killing of game on a Sunday morning down on the Fens,killing of beasts in the hours of darkness,jumping the fence onto a neighbouring estate without consent for the booty the dog had caught..bringing back hunting with dogs won't make any of that legal yet many lived their lives working their dogs these ways due to work and family comittments.. Top & bottom of it is this..if you have permission to be on the land your very lucky and can go about your business relatively at ease,if not things are not one jot different to what things were like before the ban..its just a game of russian roulette and sooner or later things will get messy if you continue to run the gauntlet..it's either quit the game or keep on keeping on ..only you can decide if this games for you ? ..

yes its had a big effect on my life, !!!!! i am 53 years old got my first lurcher when i was 12 years old and have had them ever since, thats 40 years of coursing and mooching, and owning working lurchers coursing dogs and purebred coursing dogs, i spent a lot of time running hares with my own dogs with with lurcher clubs, also the whippet coursing club, also 3 different greyhound coursing clubs, the saluki coursing club, as well as knocking about either on my own or with mates on good permission, i had many many friends who were like minded who ran dogs, now all of the clubs have gone and most of my old mates have long packed in cos of the potential hassle that goes with the ban, we had loads of permission still have a bit round here now, but lost loads of good land all over the country, as not all landowners dare / or want to condone breaking the law, which is what they do if they knowingly let lad course hares, we've lost loads of land cos of this, and thats off farmers who we were good pals with aswel,

 

i have always poached too, years ago it wasn't so bad, now if your in the wrong place, you have everyone after you, coppers with police dogs, helicopters, the lot, so yes it has had a big effect on my life, and not for the better,

i used to course legally with like minded people in coursing clubs on permission with loads of hares, some of the best times I've had, a lot of younger lads say to me "that must have been great" well it was, and nows your chance to push for it to all come back, because a repeal simply means we go back to how hunting with dogs was in 2004 a repeal isn't negotiable or debatable it makes the ban null and void, obsolete whatever you want to call it put simply the ban will be over, if you've got a bit of permission land or join a club then theres no taking dogs off people no taking cars off people no asbos, no fines, no criminal convictions, and an opportunity for young lads to get into the great sport what us older fellers have seen, theres nothing better than waking up early and putting your dogs in the car to go and run a few hares with your mates, rather than looking over your shoulder all the time wondering if your going to get car took off you
