francolin 449
just a thought as I know very little about breeding mules, but have seen a lot over the years, why is there no chaffinch mules or hybrids for that matter, are they hard to produce or just not a nice cross, the chaffie has a nice song and colour,or is it because they rear on live food to some extent. peterhunter86 8,627
Maybe they cant mule or hybrid I don't think a bullfinch can either I reckon fireman is the best for this question
gnipper 6,589
I think it's only the bully cock that can't mule. Chaffie crosses can be done.
fireman 11,038
The bully and chaffie cocks can only reproduce with their own,the hens can reproduce with others, same as you never seen a chaffie mule myself and can see it wouldn't be done for the song as such but maybe they can't sing like other mules can so can't be taught a different song. Closest i've got was a greenie mule that was weaned by a chaffie cock who's own nest had failed and that mule ended up plinking like a chaffie cock but never sang like one as such..

fireman 11,038
have you bred any straight chaffinch in the past fireman,if so are they hard to breed, atb. Had a pair before but never got a succsesfull nesting out of them, the cock escaped and i gave the hen away afterwards, but i do have a pair this year but they ain't doing much and i think watching them that it's the cock that's not driving her to nest as such,so the jury's out with them at the moment. The chaffie hen will mule and hybrid with canaries or finches but the cocks can only produce with their own kind as with the male Bully.. So if you ever breed a Bully x Chaffie you will be the first ever person to do so

wirral countryman 2,110
I tried a few times to breed chaffs but always lost the young aged 9 to 11 days old,I released the parents in the end,I put it down to lack of the right live food as suggested earlier in this thread, good luck to any one breeding these really attractive birds, WM
fireman 11,038
There has been hybrids produced from the cock chaffinch to the hen bramblefinch... You are right there mate,i forgot about them . Your right WCM it would have been down to diet needs,i remember Craigyboy saying how he or his uncle had a chaffie cock they'd be able to open a hatch and let out to find wild food for a brood he was sire to and come the time when they had stopped breeding they'd just close the hatch again, some bird to have that one eh ..
