BlackStreak 498
I've got a pretty good story from the night some of the pictures were taken. I use night vision to look for pigs at night in the crop fields. I'm training two 9 month old wolf hound/deer hound/mastiff pups, doing so by taking 1 pup out a night with my stag and letting them catch together on medium sized pigs. A large sounder usually only has 1 big boar in it that I don't want my pups catching yet till they have a little more age and experience. Loan pigs in the fields are generally big boars also and I'll opt to pass them up if I have a young pup... One of the fields I was checking had a large sounder in it. I unloaded the dogs and put them on leads and walked them to withing 100 yards from the pigs, careful to lead the dogs to the opposite side of the sounder that the big boar was on. I released the dogs together and they both got lined out on the same pig. They caught that pig after about a 100 yard race. I dispatched that pig with a knife (if I have someone with me, we will tie the hogs and put them in a trailer) and give the dogs and especially the pup a lot of praising. I looked around with the night vision and seen that the sounder had run to the back of the field and started feeding again . Put both dogs on the lead and headed to the sounder. The boar was the closest pig in the sounder to us. Always mind full of the wind direction, I lead the dogs to the opposite side the boar was on and again turned the dogs loose together. This time each dog lined out on their own pig. The pups pig run a big circle and was caught close to where the chase started while my stags pig run a straight line to the trees. Stag caught his first about 50 yards before the hog made it out of the field. My pup run hers down in short order too. It's awsome to watch it all through the night vision. As my pups decent sized sow started squeeling the boar come to investigate. I started running at the boar while shouting at him and shinning him with a flashlight. It got his attention and he held his ground for longer than I liked but he did spook finally and run away as I was still running at him. I got to my pup and tried to take a short video with my phone of her holding but I thought I heard another pig running by. Between this pig squeeling and my stags pig squeeling in the distance, I wasn't if I heard another pig up close to us or not. I looked through the night vision and that big b***%*d had come back. Ohhhh crap!!! I run the hog through to shut it up and was again shining the boar and hollering at him. Thankfully he didn't rush as all I had was a light and a knife to fight him off. My pup was still holding her hog oblivious to the big boar. He finally ran off and when the pups hog expired I give e her a brief praising and grabbed her by the collar and took off for the stag and his pig. We didn't get far and I seen her become aware of the other caught hog up ahead so I turned her loose and she took off. I got there shortly after and dispatched that hog. The stag was pretty hot by now so I quickly lead them back to the truck where I had a bucket of water waiting on them. 5 weeks prior to this hunt a big boar ripped my stag off another hog he was caught on by coming in behind him and sticking nose between my stags back legs and ripping him off. Stag about lost his balls and had a long gash front the inside of his thigh to about even with but left of his anus. Several stables and a little sowing and a little time off and he is back with a vengeance. This boar ripping my stag off his caught hog was why i was so worked up when the big boar from this last hunt was coming into my pups catch. If a good dog or pair of them is caught on the said boar, all is under control but when that boar is running around free and the dogs are holding a different pig then that boar can really tee off on your dogs. 11 Quote Link to post

msula87 9
Hey BlackStreak! I actually just saw your reply to the catch dog post over on East Texas Hog Doggers. It's a small world when it comes to working dogs I suppose. Great story! Keep telling them how we do it in Texas! Michael 1 Quote Link to post
BlackStreak 498
Hello Michael Thanks for the compliment! I would not be where I am today had it not been for the time I spent researching stuff and going back through the archives on the ETHD. There are still a lot of wonderful people and good dog men (and women) that actively participate on the forum but my passion for hog dogging lies in long dogs and lurchers. I feel much more at home here around others that share the same passion I do for sight hounds and lurchers as I'm sure you can tell. Are you one of the few hog doggers in Texas that runs lurchers or sight hounds? Where bouts in Texas do you call home? I'm from around the Jacksboro area. West of Fort Worth by about an hour and a half. Dean 1 Quote Link to post

I fear that if we don't elect a devout constitution conservative for our next president, we won't even be able to chase a rabbit and we sure won't be able to shoot it. We have lost so many of our freedoms already and they are trying their best to squash independent individuals. They have already rewrote our history books.
