A Happy Tail Of A Lurcher

Recommended Posts

After our beloved lurcher bitch Tanni died a year a ago we had a vacancy. We were told of a bad case picked up by South East Dog Rescue. Heidi was a problem dog, too aggressive and disturbed for adoption. When we saw her she was covered in years of matted, dirty fur; she dodged and snarled at attempts to stroke her; she was emaciated with a pot belly, obviously from malnutrition (she ate rubbish); and she barked non-stop and attacked other dogs. And yet....we chose to believe in her and took her from whatever dodgy part of London she came from to lurcher paradise in Lincolnshire. The smells and sights gob-smacked her. She had never seen a horse or a hedgehog, possibly never run on much grass or entered a wood. A year on, with proper food (actually only basic working dog mixture from the local farm shop), love and lots of tlc she is reverting to everything you expect of a lurcher- fast, nimble, alert and increasingly obedient. She is loyal and wants to belong with us and to run with Marra, a mostly greyhound dog, and loves open countryside to do this. This story has two morals: firstly, born a lurcher, always a lurcher whatever bad treatment and environment might do; and secondly, all you need is love.
